I believe they're intended as watch pockets, and have used them as such in the past. These days they function as coin pockets.

a/k/a fob pocket and, yes, it was used for storing pocket watches. Sometimes called "stop watches" which is another obsolete term.

Interesting that this whole thing has come "full circle" and that pocket could now, properly, be used to store a car fob.
