  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you let your pets. . .

Absolutely not.

I do feed them off the same set of dishes I use for my food. But I discourage begging - so no eating from my plate.

no, separate alcove (dining area) and their own dish/drink ware.

absolutely no people food from the table to the alcove. don't have any begging at people meal times because of this policy...|

Plates, yes, all the time. Saves on cleanup and a little variety is good for them. I don't drink much they want, so cups no.

I'm a vegetarian and they are obligate carnivores, so the issue rarely comes up. I will let them have a sip of my milk, or finish off a cup of yogurt from time to time, though.

If I had a dog I wouldn't let it eat human food at all and probably wouldn't want it on the couch or beds.

I think it's gross that some people sleep in the same bed with their dogs.

Oh shit Sultan, you don't even want to know the things I've let some of the dogs (and pussys) I've slept with do!oops!!oops!

hey rav, lets face it, if megsy is anything like my princess charcoal, they eat better than we do anyway...#-o:(

and as long as i am here, who was the asshole that said mc donald cartons aren't proper dinnerware...i know, formal meals require the good stuff and then, i am partial to the burger king line personally.

I would never share meals with pets, let alone allow them indoors for a long duration.

I consider pets to be strictly outdoors, and to me, outdoors = germs.

Now I'm not an excessive germaphobe and won't go into a frenzy when a pet enters the house, but mentally, I'll mark the area they passed with a black cross. Regardless whether you can see the dirt or not, it's filthy in my eyes until I know it has been cleaned over.

Also, I find it hard to share any sort of cutlery/dishware with others. It's just something I can't do.
If I can't share that with humans, pets aren't exactly creeping up my acceptance scale.

my dog is a member of my family. i do not allow him to eat off our dinnerware, i do not allow him to be fed human food from the table. i do however give him some left overs that are good for him, i place them in his bowl and that's where he eats them from.

he does sleep on my bed tho, it's hard to discourage when you are fast asleep and have no idea what is going on. besides, he's cute as hell.....

When my partner and I got our first dog, it was VERY hard to kick him out of bed. He was so cute and wanted to be there, and seemed so lonely when out out. But the fact is he was to damn big, and was (literally) coming between us.

So he doesn't sleep in the bed anymore with us - though if just one of us is reading or napping there he's welcome. And he knows it - if one person is in the bed he'll jump up, but as soon as a second person shows up he's off to his dogie bed.

I let them clean out my cup once I have finished, and usually give them a bit of my dinner - strangely my cat likes to eat anything, so whatever I'm eating I get those big round eyes. Mostly when I am eating crisps/chips - she loves those!

My Great grandmother always left a portion of her meal on her plate and then when she was finished, her cat would clean the plate at the table.

Growing up, our cat Sam had his own stool at the table with his own plate. He sat between my dad and me. Every meal.

Our cats eat butter right out of the butter dish although this isn't supposed to happen.

Gotta say folks, after 40 years of having cats, I've never caught anything from them. Unlike the humans I've shared stuff with.

So who's unclean?

I wonder how the people with cats PREVENT them from cleaning your plates or occasionally stealing from the table.
Leave one person in the kitchen, one person at the table guarding the food all the time :) ?

Pets aren't for everyone. If you think of them as filthy animals to be kept strictly outdoors, you probably should never have one....maybe a chicken or a goat would be a good option.

Of course. My dog is a part of the family, not a roommate. She gets her own bowl (because after all we each get our own plates so why shouldn't she). And she also gets tidbits from our meals.

She never begs or bothers, but she is appreciative when she gets a taste.

No onions, grapes, or macadamia nuts though - it is very bad for their health.
