I’m not sure I’m willing to write off homo-distress (if ‘phobia’ won’t do) as being an involuntary reaction, or unconscious reflex.

I’ve known, worked with, and even lived with str8 guys that were totally comfortable around me. Many were pretty butch, too. One guy works in law enforcement. (It destroyed my cop kink. Damn him. But still a great guy.)

I think it has more to do with revealing insecurity about themselves more than anything.

What it is about interacting with a man who has the capacity to fall in love with another man that freaks them out? Do their minds instantly focus on homo-sex when they look us in the eye? If so, why does that happen to them but not the millions of other str8 people that don’t have an issue with us?

I’m not suggesting they are all closet-cases or secretly bi; their distress may have nothing to do with sex at all. Perhaps they have intimacy issues in general, or perhaps they feel disconnected from relating to other guys.

I don’t know.

But in any event, as I said, I just can’t bring myself to excuse this behaviour as typical. In my experience, it just isn’t.

One guy at work has stopped talking to me on a personal level since he found out, IE we don't talk about movies, which was something we did lol, like EVERYDAY, but we still work together fine. Thats out of like 50 people, so it's pretty good. But more than one gay guy work there so, w/e.

I made one of my straight male coworkers pretty damn uncomfortable a while back ago. I had actually hired him as an assistant in my department. He was a really nice guy and was very smart, but he had just moved to New York from a small, conservative town that he had lived in all of his life until just that week. I was the first gay person he had actually ever had to have contact with on a daily basis. He didn't dislike me, he just clearly didn't know how to act around a gay person, and that caused him to be very uncomfortable. After a few weeks though, it all passed and he's been himself and completely comfortable around me since.

A lot of them think that every gay male is eyeballing them like he wants to have sex with them. Probably because these people judge every woman they see based on how sexable they are.

For me it is somewhat the opposite.

I don’t work, but I am on a board. Everyone on the board is gay, but me, I’m pan. The thing of it is that the others always do gay/queer jokes and they always go out of their way not to include me. Even though I have been around them for years I still don’t know if they know I like guys. They have never asked about my orientation and I have never told them either. I have a feeling they think I am straight. Because of that I think I make them uncomfortable when they are talking about certain things.
