  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

do you miss any foods from your "homeland"?

Okay, foods I miss (at least in shops, since I can cook, or visit Mama or friends from Germany) are real bread, real pastries (made with yeast - not that self-raising crap), cream tortes and cakes, many cheeses and other dairy, cheap but good quality chocolate, the range of meats, and cheap asparagus and berries. Food in Australia has become ridiculously expensive, as has housing and clothing. I sound like a glutton, and I may well be, but I'm still slender and lithe!:D Mmmm, foooood...

I grew up near East Lansing and went to University there. The favorite pizza joint was Bell's Pizza in East Lansing.

Cool...we don't really know the same places though, as I don't get up to EL/Lansing very often. I actually turned down admission at "State" when I also got accepted in Ann Arbor at the same time - I just didn't feel ready to be too far from home yet. I was still pretty sheltered in those days.

shellfish and fish sauce
durian
taro cake

I assume you can find imported fish sauce where you live...doesn't it import well? Or is the particular product you prefer not available?

Yes. Yes, I do. I miss fresh seafood like crazy. Catfish, Snapper, and Crawfish don't exist here.
Also Boudin, File Gumbo, and Jambalaya... And Sweet Tea.

There are a couple of "Cajun" restaurants here, But it's not like MoMo's AT ALL.

I really did not appreciate how easily accessible good cheese is in Wisconsin until I left...
