I have a slight stutter and it's aggravating. When I'm excited or I'm trying to get my point across, I often fumble up my words and it comes out as nonsensical mumbles. People constantly ask me to repeat what I say and give me that "What?" look. One of my friends asks me to repeat what I say almost everytime I open my mouth.

I'm so embarassed by this that I often times don't talk because I can't get the words out. I've ruined jokes, debates, presentations, and simple conversations because of my stuttering. I don't like mentioning it and I definately don't want anyone to call it out because I feel stupid every time it happens. Combine it with social awkwardness and a struggle for the correct word and I'm a social mess.

What's strange is that I have a hard time starting up a sentence but once I'm going, I'm good.

yes. my little cousin stutters and its nothing. just slow down when you start talking. that helps him.

I've had a horrible stutter my whole life. Speech therapy did nothing. It's been a curse as long as I can remember.

I stutter a lot mainly because American Sign Language is my most natural language (I am deaf). I remember having a very hard time trying to explain to the police officer when he showed up at my house after I reported seeing a bear in my back yard last week. He must have thought I was crazy. It can be awkward for me mmany times when I am with people who do not sign.

I stutter sometimes, I used to stutter when i was child, but speech therapy helped.

Over time I stutter less, probably because my brain is slowing down.

To name but a few:

James Earl Jones
Winston Churchill
Joe Biden
Elvis Presley
Marilyn Monroe
Rowan 'Mr. Bean' Atkinson
Lewis Carroll
Stephen Hawking (when he could still speak)
Samuel L. Jackson
Tiger Wood
Julia Roberts
King George VI

I have a friend that has a fairly harsh stutter. Sometimes he halts on words so hard it sounds like he is sneezing. What I have heard and read over and over again is that if you are talking to someone who stutters, don't correct them and don't finish their sentences for them. My friend's stutter gets very noticeable when when he is uncomfortable or nervous. I never try to finish his sentences for him or anything like that - I am pretty sure that it makes him more confident.

That is a stammer. It's a bit different than a stutter. I have a cousin who has a rather serious stammer. He can get hung up on a word for many seconds. I've seen him go for almost half a minute before he can get the word to come out.

You're right about not finishing the word or sentence for them. Wait it out and let them finish on their own.

I know a portuguese guy at college who stuttered only when he spoke in English. He was perfectly fine speaking his native portuguese, so I would say stammering is a psychological problem to do with confidence.

I used to stutter all the time when I was younger. Now I just take my time (though without sounding slow-minded). When I'm nervous or talking too fast I am likely to stutter my words.

OK, bumping a bit of an old thread up here, but there are actually people who find stuttering a turn on! I posted something on the fetish forum a couple of days ago :)

Try not to worry about a stutter guys, anyone who can't see past that is so not a good guy for you anyway! :)

While I don't stutter and I don't find stuttering a turn on, it's slightly endearing and doesn't bother me.

I used to have a really bad stutter/stammer, but now it's only when I'm nervous/exited. Unfortunately I also have an anxiety disorder so when I am nervous it's really bad.

My very first lover used to stutter. I found it completely adorable.

Growing up I had a friend who stuttered. I thought it was because his parents were mean to him, and he got flustered by them.

I've never had a problem with it but for a very short time ( a few years ago) when I was stressed out at work I did find myself starting out sentences in a stutter, when dealing with overbearing coworkers.

I would like to make a question to those who stutter. When one speaks to himself you never lose your train of thought, right? I mean you don't stutter to yourself. So it only appears with communication with others. Are the others who cause this.
When I met this guy who stuttered, I had the feeling that he feared that I was urging him to speak up soon and easy, and I wasn't. He got so nervous about others' reactions, that it was like a vicious circle.

As I gave the less importance to that, with time he lost it almost completely with me, while he instantly stuttered when talking to others. How come?
