I don't see why gays have to be a subculture - they weren't in ancient Rome. It's only been recently that the subculture has emerged, and I think that has marginalized a lot of people.

I was very definitely effeminate as a child, and I identified as female growing up, at least until I reached adolescence. After that, my identification changed, but that doesn't happen for everyone, and no one should expect it to. I see human sexuality as something fluid, something that can change through someone's life, and categories have a limiting effect on what one can experience. People do go through stages of life, although this does not mean that being gay is a stage that one will outgrow - it simply means that people change as they age and that sexuality is not necessarily static.

I've been reading a couple of books by John Boswell, and they have been helping me get a better historical perspective on sexuality. Another book that I have that has been helpful is The Pre-Columbian Mind by Francisco Guerra, but good luck finding a copy of that! Get a copy of Fellini's Satyricon, or read the book by Petronius to help get a historical perspective of human sexuality. I think Boswell is right that European society in the past 500 years has been the beginning of repression.
