Do You Remember That Show Playing It Straight?

Which is why this show got cancelled... it portrayed gay people as wanting to pretend to be someone else for money... not a representation of gay people at all.

bingo.

I'm sick and tired of gay men on TV being protrayed as shifty, sneaky liars.

A real gay man shoudln't try to pretend he's straight. He should be himself.

OH.. it's ok if he doesn't "seem gay." That's just fine.

But if he pretends to be straight.. that's just cowardly. It's why I hate the term "straight acting." go ahead and be yourself, and if you're just a regular guy who's gay.. that's fine.

But dont' take pride in being able to hide. It's nothing to be proud of at all.

exactly ... theres nothing "masculine" about pretending to be someone else

Theres nothing "masculine" about being a dirty liar

And theres nothing "masculine" about being made a fool of on national T.V. by misrepresenting yourself and your community

We had a version of this show in the UK as well, and with the exception of one episode it was one of the biggest travesties I have ever seen.

The exception was the episode halfway through where one of the guys had "won" a dinner date alone with the girl, and said: "You know what? I can't do this any more. You're a great girl and you deserve to win the money. I'm gay"

I mentally cheered.

And then they spent the rest of the episode surreptitiously watching the rest of the guys at whatever bullshit activity they had thought up that week, and discussing who pinged his gaydar.

I managed to download every episode of show back then and really appreciated how it breaks down stereotypes in a way that no other shows have done, lots of surprises lol! It also spawned off quite a few guys for other reality shows.

And on the topic of Queer Eye being full of stereotypes....

It WASN'T.

It actually showed a greater variety of people from our community than those fakes on Playing it Straight....

I think Queer Eye did more for the community than Playing it Straight ever did...

Queer Eye presented a wide range of guys from the nelliest to the butchest in a way to attempt to show the world that we are just like everyone else...only better. Which is why people came to them for help

As opposed to PIS which showed some guy pretending to be interested in a girl in order to fool her and the viewers so he could win cash and fabulous prizes....

So which one was better for the community?
