Do You Think Compact Discs Will Soon be just a Memory ?

Dogs around the world are saddened that they can no longer do this:

CD's have a greater bit rate, and greater dynamic range. With MP3's you lose all of that! I have an Ipod, but I get everything ripped from my CD's at a bit rate of 320 Kbps. I'll only use my ipod when I'm running or traveling, but in my car and in my home

Doesn't ipod have compatibility with at least one lossless audio format? I thought it did.
Also, VBR > 320 Kbps.

I am sure they will be around for a while yet...mind you they said that about vinyl and look what happened there.
There are still artists who make releases in vinyl. ;)

There will always be people who enjoy having something tangible for their money. I'm one of them

Yes, yes, I agree with what he said.

Interesting points, guys.

I suppose I'm a bit of an audiophile, myself, and I do hear a loss of dynamic range when comparing a CD to a downloadable file. Then again, I know people who still will not give up vinyl, swearing that any digital reproduction doesn't faithfully reproduce the sound of certian instruments, especially the strum of an acustic guitar.

I see (hear) thier point as well.

My ' uber audio' friends would not be caught dead listening to an iPod, no matter if it's a classical performance or a Grateful Dead show... But I know that thier ears are in the vast minority.

It's interesting to see that the younger guys that posted here see no need for Cd's at all, and really that tells you all you need to know. The younger consumers will always win out, cause that's where the long term money is...

*Sigh* Where will it end ?

I've got pretty good ears. I can certainly tell when an mp3 is playing vs a CD...but only when my attention's on it. When I'm driving, when I'm on the treadmill, when I'm walking to work, when I'm cleaning house, I can't tell. Because my attention is mainly elsewhere.

>>>This world is in too much of a damn rush all the time to change things. What's the damn hurry?

To pull out a dogeared phrase from the 1990s, "it's the economy stupid". :)

Ever on the cutting edge of technology, I'm getting ready to add a CD changer to my car. LOL.

Even CDs sound thin to me. But heaven knows they have been practical. I suspect they have a ways to go. Remember, CDs and DVDs share the same basic format and despite what the music industry does, digital files of all kinds are on CD/DVD for computers. Not that there aren't thumb drives.

The day that CDs become obsolete is the day I quit acquiring new music. Unlike the large number of people who could care less about having a physical manifestation of their music, I like having the actual album booklet, CD, and the other extras that sometimes come along with it. I don't like the idea of every album I own existing only in the box that is a hard drive. Digital isn't always better, and for me, it never will be when it comes to music (movies as well).

hope not, and I also hope BlueRay will not replace regular dvds.

Maybe I'm not much of an audiophile but the sound of mp3's is comparable to me to cd sound, regardless of "bit rate." I do know that the old vinyl records put out a much warmer sound. cd's aren't everything they're cracked up to be and I wouldn't miss them much.

i still have an 8-track in my car...whats a compack disk?

I noticed Amazon essentially does the same thing. My problem with it is that my vehicle only plays CDs--not cards. How am I supposed to listen to a new album on the way home?
Download the mp3 to your computer and burn it to a disk in CD format. Fortunately, my car radio plays mp3's.
