My cousin and her family just left here after showing up unexpectedly. They kept making comments about my nudes. Especially of the pieces with males.

My mother has also said I should take them down when my nephews come over.

Both instance the adults tend not to have much if any problem with my female nudes, but seem to think the male nudes are going to corrupt the kids that see them.

Why do people think nude bodies are such shameful and dirty things? Why is it they can only see the nudes as a sexual thing?

Anyways do you think nude art is harmful for kids to see?

Yes.

We should teach kids to think of their bodies as dirty and something to be ashamed of. You know.. teach them that sex is wrong and messed up and that their bodies are things that should always be hidden and a source of guilt and dread.

If my mother said something like that to me I'd have some very choice words for her.

No we should be much more expressive and many of the mindfuck issues kids have to deal with would disappear. I think Soilwork hit it on the head. We are so messed up as a society because of our own guilt laden supposed morality.

nude and natural

wow, haven't there been them around and

in all kinds of public places for 1,000s of years?

Do these kids take their baths or showers with

clothes on?

If your art works are satyrs etc gamboling in erected

states that is in poor taste and pushing it but there is

also prudish and then even semi-terminally totally stupid.

Any body not remember that if its a secret kids really pry...

no big deal will stay no big deal.

I wouldn't say harmful, but depending on the age, chances are they won't see it as art. It will be a naked dude or chick. But it really does depend on how young they are. But even though some will say the body is a beautiful thing(which it is) most kids will just see it as a naked person.

Our country has such a warped view of sex and violence that it's really disgraceful. I remember sitting in the theater watching Final Destination 3 and in that movie, there's an extended scene where two girls are topless in tanning beds. A couple had brought their young (around 5) son with them to the extremely violent, gruesome movie and covered his eyes during the nude scene, but didn't think twice about letting him watch other people getting their head shredded by an engine fan or getting nails shot through their face. We expose children to horrible images of violence at extremely young ages but teach them that their own bodies are to be hidden at all times. We're all human. We all have the same parts. We all have the same bodily functions. Yet, talking about them or seeing them is strictly taboo.

I think it depends on the context or the specific work and the age of the child.

Of course if the Art is proposed sexually, but I'm going to assume the Art you have is just general nudity since you're asking the question.

The pictures below are some of what I own or are similar. The last one is the one everyone seems to have the biggest issue with.

How old are your nephews?

13, 6 and 5. The five year old is autistic. And my cousin's kids are 15, 12 and 6.

See post 9 for ages.

You are right though. My younger cousins just laughed about it. My nephews don't care one way or the other. It seems to be adults that have an issue about it then make it an issue.

I have dozens of pieces around my home and my cousins didn't pay any attention to them until their mother said something about them.

I think...

Um, as we all know, body can be seen as an object of desire, it can incite sexual reactions, it... turns on. And I'm not trying to say that that's wrong, because is a natural thing, and not to be hidden...

When I think of artsy nudes, I think of nudes free of sexual connotations, I think of bodies being beautiful without involving sex, I think of naked bodies out of the sexual context. So as that, I don't think is wrong at all, it dosen't matter if the kids are 5 or if they are 15.

I also know that there's erotic art, which involve a sexual context. If so, I do think it would be appropiate to hide to kids who don't know yet anything about sex... and sex learnt the right way. But if the kid is mature enough, screw what your family says, art is art, with or without a nude, it's not like you're showing them two dudes having anal sex. (:

It's not harmful but children are still not capable of understanding these kind of arts. They're still into playing and discovering basic things and they might only see it as something not art and that requires many complicated explanations.

Well, perhaps your oldest cousin would understand well, and your second oldest one to some extent, but not the smallest one.

Well, if you were to enter a Hindu temple, you will notice that some of the Gods and Goddess are butt naked. Kids here are exposed to holy tits and sacred pudendas. They grew up to be just fine.

Kids will probably just laugh at it. Nothing is more funnier than someone's else peepee.

I like the torso pics, not so much the one with the red cloth. Did she comment loudly about it in front of her kids? If parents don't make a big issue out of something their kids don't see as anything that special, then their attention will be elsewhere. Once you zoom in on something loudly, they take notice...

This is how to change a child's attention. If they're being silly or being difficult about something, or their behaviour is bad, you have to divert their attention to something else that is fun. Its a manipulation trick to quell tempers and change bad behaviour on the one hand, but if used in the wrong way or without thought, parents draw the attention of their child to something they don't want their kids to see or do, and their kid becomes fascinated at what's bugging their parent so their focus is on it. Utter reverse of what their mother wants. Bad parenting - don't say that to her, she won't like it, but that is the truth - I'm a parent myself :)

Thynight, forget about my post earlier. I thought I saw a shadow of dick there but apparently it's my insomniac hallucination !oops!

Hang the pictures up. They're so tame kids would rather eat play dough.

I agree with Soilwork, you should call your mother and thank her for her good advice. If you don't teach them that sex is dirty and shameful and unnatural at an early age you're going to suck all of the fun and excitement out of it for them when they're adults. Why spoil it for them. Hide the naked people pictures and make them work at sneaking around for a peek, otherwise they'll lack the life skills they'll need when they're older.

And what's wrong with pictures of flowers or fruit - they can be just as dirty if looked at in the right way. Or you could have a nice hunting scene, or a deer rack or a stuffed bass instead.

^I'm inclined to agree with this.

I get that it's art and non-sexual. But when I was under 16, there was still waaaaaaaaaaaay too much novelty value in seeing exposed genitals. It might be something if you were showing the art and explaining the non-sexuality of it, but a kid with an over-active hormonal system is probably just going to get a thrill out of it. This is probably largely owing to a change in society, alas.

Maybe it's another story if it's something they're used to seeing, like if you know your extended family is quite casual about nudity. Otherwise... I can kinda see the issue your family had with it all.

Having said all that, if the kids didn't comment then they probably either didn't notice or didn't care.

Out of curiosity why didn’t you like the last one?

See post 10.

They didn't pay attention to the nudes until their mother said something about them. They were all more interested in my collection of signed skate decks.

Nah I don't think its harmful. I mean, its the human body and stuff.

If its porn? then yes, get it away haha.

It's not porn; ergo, not something that's meant to be raunchy and "perverse", for lack of a better choice of word. I've seen raunchier things - in my parents' bedroom, for instance.

I don't see the issue, and, I don't see how a child will take it as "it's okay for a person in life seeing me in a field to just strip naked and flash their non-erect dick at me".

The fact that they're not at the age to understand is not the curse their parents are making them out to be. Leave them up - and then tell the parents that they can either drop by less or evolve their understanding of ART before entering.
