Eh, I dunno. At first I was ready to agree since I think it's a great outlet for whatever sexual frustrations (undoubtedly making some people less inclined to act out dangerous fantasies), but I think it probably wrecks its share of lives too. There are probably people with porn addictions, or people who are exposed to porn at too young an age and do things they shouldn't.

I'm sure it has some sort of net effect on society, but I couldn't say whether that effect is positive or negative.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that porn would make the world a better place, but there are definitely both positive and negative aspects to it.

On a somewhat related note I am taking a human sexuality class and the very last topic we will be covering is commercial sex, so I wonder what my prof and those that wrote my textbook will have to say about pornography. Can't wait!

There has always been porn...take a look at ancient Egyptian wall-drawings and in ancient Rome and Etruria they also had pornographic imagery on walls, vases, etc. It fills a need in society for a large number of individuals, for, i am sure, a variety of reasons. It was not perceived as bad in the ancient world, as their cultural mores were vastly different from today's. It obviously is still extremely popular today, judging from the multi-billion $-per-year revenue generated by sales. I for one, certainly enjoy it!

One thing that seems weird to be about porn: We ALL watch it and need it, yet so few people are willing to actually act or produce in pornography. You'd think it'd be a supply-and-demand thing, or something.
