There was a thread about this on an etiquette forum I visited once. It seems to be culture based:

Asia -- shoes off in home; in Japan, special slippers specifically for the bathroom as well
Continental Europe -- shoes off in home
Canada -- shoes off in home
Britain -- shoes on in home, except among Asian households
East coast U.S. -- depends; culture-specific
Midwest (except for Minnesota) -- shoes on in home
Minnesota -- shoes off in home (large Scandinavian population, I think)
Australia -- depends; culture-specific

We didn't have many people from the West coast, the Middle East, or Africa, though. These are just general trends. There were some outliers.

I personally never wear shoes inside the house, unless they're for indoor-use only. I had a pair of flip-flops that I wore around my shared house when I was in college instead of shoes. Just think of all the places people's shoes have been: rainy city streets with litter and drainage all about, outdoor tracks, fields, PUBLIC RESTROOMS! Bleargh! I don't like the thought of that stuff on my carpet.

Shoes are bad for your feet if you wear them all the time anyway. They throw the balance of weight off slightly. The human foot is impeccably evolved specifically to distribute the weight of an upright skeleto-muscular complex just so. This is why people are taking up barefoot running nowadays. Not mention, you need to let your feet BREATHE. I don't understand why people are so touchy about revealing their feet. Do they have foot odor issues?

Thanks for this post. :)
Interesting difference between Britain and continental Europe.
My Bosnian friend say something bad about British hygiene and i don't want to repeat it. :)

Inside the house? My Ugg Slippers of course :)

:rotflmao: i had to google it to see if they were real. did you seriously waste 100 dollars for some slippers?

but back to the thread, i wear slippers around the house and i go around barefooted. i have a thing about not having dirty feet when i'm in bed though.

I always have my shoes off at home, unless I expecting someone to stop by. Whenever I've been asked to take off my shoes at anyone's house it's turned out to be a prelude to sex. I would never ask someone to take off their shoes at my house for fear of embarrassing them, in case they had holes in their socks or smelly feet.

Taking your shoes off is not about being anal with cleaning but you drag a lot of bacteria and dirt inside. People who have kids could get sick from this.
I'm sorry, but that is anal.

Nope, I take off my shoes once I'm inside. In the winter I'll wear slippers and/or just socks depending on how cold it is. In the summer I'll sometimes go barefoot.

I don't when I'm alone, but if I had company over I would. My father said when he went to my cousins house they all took their shoes off but he won't. I would have if others do. When I have dinner at my friends house he takes his shoes off, so I do the same, unless I forget.

Depends on the household down here. But most people take shoes off upon entering a house. Just a common courtesy.

We never require our guests to take off their shoes; totally up to them.

We do actually take a pair of slippers with us though if we are visiting other people's houses and aren't just wearing our heavy woolly socks.

Me ans Ash never wear shoes/trainers and the house ( this is the only thing I carried on from when I lived at home with our father ) But when his friends come and visit its up to them what they do. I mop the floors everyday ( but thats just because of the dogs and the mess they cause )
When we go visit friends we always ask if they mind if we come in in our footwear most in the UK don't.
And neither do any of our friends in Canada.

I'll wear then if I'm doing heavy duty cleaning around my apartment that require me to make back-and-forth trips to the dumpster across the street. But otherwise no.

No. You remove your shoes before you going in someone's house.

No you don't. You either follow the hosts lead or they can ask you to take them off. I don't want people coming over and feeling that they have to take their shoes off and show me their nasty feet and cheesy foot odor because some cultures do it.

So when Asians have a party in their house is it always a barefoot thing, maybe they are into foot fetish.

I also know that a lot of women would not want to take their shoes off because they like their high heels.

I'm the shoe nazi: No shoes off for you!!!

No high heels please on our hardwood floors....although I'm not going to be able to ask women to take them off.

Always remember that a 125 pound woman wearing stilettos with a 1/4 inch square heel, placing all her weight on the heel point, exerts 2000 pounds per square inch on that quarter sawn french polished parquet floor in your halle des glaces or on that antique silk rug in your salon.

Socks.

I prefer to keep my shoes off because it dirties my tiles and carpets quicker. Socks because... well, cold tiles.
