I have an HP Envy with Windows 7.0. I got a Targus 3.0 docking station and want to extend to my Toshiba LCD TV. Of course, none of these come with any instructions...well, the TV does, but that's not the issue. To my question: Do I have to hook up the HDMI cable from TV to Dock and the 6-prong cable from TV to dock, as well? I only have to plug in one cable to the PC, right? I don't know why they can't give step by step instructions instead of diagrams that are supposed to be foolproof. Well, they're not, and I am proof....lol.

Can you provide model #s for the HP Envy, Targus 3.0 Docking station, and Toshiba TV.

With those pieces of info we might be able to get the conundrum sorted for you.

Some further thoughts...

Yes, only one cable from HP Envy to Dock. Ensure it's a USB 3.0 (SS or Blue) port on the Envy.

I'm unsure whether the Dock passes audio via its HDMI port...

If it does; you should only require the 1 HDMI cable between the Dock and the TV.

(Assuming your TV has HDMI Audio capability!)

I'm unsure as to what the '6-prong' cable is!?!

Hey Burke, thanks for the response(s).
PC: HP Pavilion dv7tQuad Edition. It is supposed to able to connect to two monitors/TV whatever.
Targus Dock: ACP70USZ
Toshiba TV: 32FT2U
I wrote "6 prong"....I meant the more or less standard 15 prong connector.....
I bought an HDMI Cable, for like $32 cuz they didn't have it in the gold, and the package doesn't indicate whether it is 3.0 or 2.0. It is Ativa brand from Office Depot.
Thanks

You're welcome, and thanks for the additional info.

(The 15-pin is the VGA connector and there should be no requirement for it in this scenario)

I'm still thinking 1 USB 3.0 cable from the laptop to the dock, and 1 HDMI cable from the dock to the TV. You'd then have to manipulate W7's display properties to configure the output from the laptop through the dock to the TV.

Right-click the desktop
Click on "Personalize"
Bottom-right click on "Display"
Upper-right click on "Change display settings"
The 2 available screens should be presented for you to configure.

A quick test would be to connect the HDMI cable directly from the laptop and the TV. You'd then have to manipulate W7's display properties to configure the output to the TV from the laptop as noted above.

(Thinking aloud here... Do you require the TARGUS DOCK? Or were you looking for the convenience of leaving it, the dock, connected to the TV?)

Best of luck.

Burke

Hey Burke,
Thanks for the info. To clarify, I DO need a 3.0 HDMI cable? The concept of the dock is to just put one connection into the laptop and the TV and the peripherals, if any, would already be connected to the dock for convenience, go figger.

I'm unsure as to what level of HDMI cable you require.

None of the info I recall reading stated any specifics as to HDMI versions on any of the devices.

And yes, the dock is a nice, quick one-cable connection.

Any luck with things so far?

Hey Burke....not yet. Out of town on business, but going to get it all together this weekend. Should the dock charge the laptop, you think? I thought it would, but it doesn't appear to.
