I have to say that I am not the least bit choked up on the news that Karen Gillen will not be returning after series 7. I don't know how well the upcoming series will fair in terms of her character arc but I look forward to a new companion for the Doctor. I would have liked to keep Rory because I think he grew on me more than Amy has and I doubt that they would keep him around anyway. So, let's drum up some names for replacements and why you would choose that actor or actors. I know that we really don't have control over who they hire anyway but this is for fun. I will post my choices later and why I think they would fit and enhance the show. :

Heard a rumor that it was going to be Sophia Myles (Madame du Pompadour from the episode "The Girl in the Fireplace".

Doesn't that contradict the point of the episode?! She died never having reunited with the Doctor in the episode and it was Steven Moffat who wrote it. I don't think he'd trample over his own work like that... or would he?!

Some one draft Stephen Fry...We could use a companion, at least for a few episodes, who could rival the doctor in staying a few steps ahead.

We're supposed to be getting a new companion halfway through Series 7. Sophia Myles is rumored to be playing a new companion character, not Reinette.

I second the motion for a male companion, it would be different. Do you have anybody in mind?

I wouldn't mind seeing a new Doctor more than a new companion. It's a shame Amy's leaving but then again I guess all that lovey dovey stuff had to end eventually.

Male companions, hmmm. There has to be at least one female companion. That's the dynamic. That's what makes Doctor Who cool. The women aren't sidelined screaming "help, help" they're right there with him.

I can't think of any interesting female companions at the moment but I think Dev Patel would make an awesome male companion.

I'ld love to see Donna as a companion too but if you meddle with her fate, you take away the impact of it which can often be the downside of sci fi.

I'ld love if she had a cameo though.

As much as I loved Donna, I think they should have left her the way she was after Journey's End. Her story in The End of Time was really desperate and pathetic. As for Russell Tovey, I think that boat has gone and sailed. When I saw the finale for The End of Time, I had hopes that this would lead into him going off with Jack on Torchwood, but that didn't happen which is a shame because he was very cute as Midshipman Frame. So right now, I look forward to a new companion, all good choices that you have all posted. As for my choices, I really do not have any ideas, sure there are a lot of young up and coming actors but I want to be surprised. As for the Doctor, if and when that time comes. They should bring back the dark and brooding Doctor, the romantic, the loose canon type. I recommend Richard Armitage. "swoon"

Richard Armitage might be too handsome for the Doctor. The Doctor needs to look a bit weird. Charming but weird. Someone like Ben Whishaw (The Hour, upcoming James Bond film) would be interesting.

Of course, the role doesn't have to go to a white male. Helena Bonham Carter for example would make an awesome Doctor.

Would love to see Suranne Jones as a new companion.

As for a new doctor, would love love love to see either Benedict Cumberbatch (apparently offered the role and turned it down!) or Michael Sheen.

She seems like a nice enough person but I have noticed how the straight male demographic have gone nuts for her and everyone else is kind of like...oh well.

It was about time for a non white companion. Amara Karan would have been cool and would have had great chemistry with Matt.

Oh I'm going to miss Amy really liked her. They really should try a male companion for atleast 1 season just to break up the pattern.

It would be halarious is they got a drag queen for a companion lol.

If anything I would have loved Sophia Myles as a companion, great actress.
Loved her in the girl in the fire place one of my fav ep so sad yet so beautiful.

The problem with just having a male character is it makes the show a bit of a sausage fest. I think it's cool that an empowering female is a critical part of the Doctor Who mythology.

Now that Karen Gillen is going to be written out, I am hoping they still bring River Song back every now and again.
