  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Does anybody else feel like they wasted 4 years in high school?

Without the 6 years I did at 'High School' (schools are a bit different here), I'd have never got the qualifications I needed to get into University.

Without University, I'd have never got my degree.

Without my degree I'd have never got the job I currently hold.

Without the job I currently hold, I wouldn't have my house, food, or....y'know, money.

Without food or money, I'd have never survived long enough to grace you lot with my presence here on JustUsBoys.

Therefore, I'm thankful I went to High School and tbh, you should all be thankful I went too :)

Well, high school was kind of crap, but like you said a lot of people had it worse. I do often feel like it was a waste of time. However, I suppose that it wasnt a complete waste because it helped me get to college and I needed my degree for work purposes.

People didn't like me, and I didn't like them, but it wasn't a total waste. I learned social skills, and I became confident because of all of the hate I received. I also won some art awards thanks to a teacher that would submit my work without asking, so that made me feel like I was worth something. The only things I gained from it were personality-related advantages, not the things that the school was actually built for.

I didn't think it was. Even though the classes were bird courses, the food sucked, and the staff and teachers were underpaid angry jerks. I had the best of both worlds. I had connections and gained respect from the school gangs, so I was never bullied or shot at. LOL :), and of course I hung out with the nerds and played hackey sack and Yu gi oh between classes. Cool memories. Our high school was very ghetto though. Was so happy when I graduated.

Every second I spent in high school was time well spent. between learning and the memories i have with the friends that i still have today, I'd go back and do it all again.

Not at all - those were years filled with lifetime memories and it did help me prepare for college.

I don't felt like i wasted high school at all, I had some great memories in school. Like i said before i wish i took it more seriously and went to College straight after instead of slacking off. Watching people who were in my class with degrees is a punch in the stomach

To a degree, but I mean for all the useless stuff I put up with, I also got some pretty good times out it. The fact of the matter is that the education system we use isn't the greatest, and that's mainly because we seem to not really teach critical thinking. Teachers present facts, or in some cases what the individual teacher calls a fact (Intelligent Design, anyone?), and then the kids basically accept that as truth because it was what they were taught in school.

History is always important, if only because we need to remember the things that came before in our own efforts to avoid making the same mistakes again.

English...Well, yes, some people do not really need to take English all the way throughout high school. But, for others, it should be a necessity.

But yes, effectively, we do need to update our education systems in the western world to stress independent thought and creative processes; rather than the system we use now which is eerily close to brainwashing.

I used to think so back when I was still in it. But thinking about it right now I actually enjoyed some of the learning experiences I have had back in high school. I actually find high school more forgiving whilst in college if you messed things up, you are basically screwed. Not to mention the lecturers in college are far more threatening as they can influence your chances of actually getting a job after you graduate.

Call me privileged, naive, jaded or whatever, but I tend to believe that if your education felt wasted then it's largely your own fault...

(I mean no offence, rather that we all define what we get out of life, and school is a prime example of this)
