Ok, this is my nerdy side... I'm just wondering if anyone collects coins here. I have been for quite a while and its actually a fun hobby. All those silver coins I bought a few years ago are really paying off now that silver is way up. I noticed a couple people have coins on their avatar. If you do collect what do you collect? I'm so into kennedy halves, morgan/peace dollars, and silver eagles. Of course I buy a silver proof set and uncirculated mint set every year... and bought a silver proof quarter set this year graded pf69 DCAM. Ok so there you have my nerdy collector side... how about anyone else... or what is it that you collect? Lets try and keep it clean though :)

Just in that lazy way where we put our change in a box in the entry way.

What do I collect? Number one singles. Going back to 1890.

I collect a few of the commemorative sets and coins that Canada puts out annually. No serious collecting, though. Mostly just coins I find in my pocket change.

I don't collect them as such, but I do have some old ones in a tin somewhere which go back to Queen Victoria.

I'm an avid coin collector. I collect all American and Canadian coins. There's a smattering of Australian, UK and a few others in my collection also. I've been hoping to get a set of the new Euro coins but I'll get those off ebay eventually.

My collection is:

American:

Flying Eagle, Indian Head, Lincoln wheat, memorial and shield cents, 1857-current
Mercury & Roosevelt dimes, 1916-current
Washington quarters, 1964-current
Kennedy halves, 1964-current
SBA, SAC, Presidential and Native American dollars, 1979-current
I have 8 Silver Eagles so far.

Canadian:

large and small cents, 1910-current
nickels, dimes and quarters from, 1922-current
Nickel dollars, loonies and toonies and all the commemoratives, 1967-current

Love the 2010 Olympic quarter set! Canada really knows how to mint coins!

All the current Australian and UK coins, but not much older.

If I'm allowed to recommend a great coin forum, it's:

And we do a lot of them. Do you collect our single issue commemorative coins, too?

There are new commemoratives issued every year. Mostly quarters, but nickels and dimes, too. There are a lot of commemorative Loonies and Toonies as well. If you need help collecting them, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I used to be an avid collector as a kid. Just mostly what I could find in change and some mint and proof sets when I could scrounge up a few dollars.

I did find a big dollar coin once. My grandmother used to throw all her pennies in a really big can and let me go through them when I visited, just to keep me entertained. Well, I found a 1955 double die penny. The date, In God We Trust and Liberty were all clearly double stamped. It was in real nice shape, too! Sold it when I was in college. Had to get my car fixed. Got something like $300-400 for it. It's worth closer to $2000 now, if you can find one.

Thanks gsdx. I already have a few traders in Canada so I always get a good supply of whatever I'm searching for. They're in Vancouver, Halifax and Winnipeg so they're spread out across the country.

If you mean the single issue coins like the Navy and Roughrider loonies, the Quebec toonie, etc then yes, I do get them. For 2010 there are 4 loonies.... loon, olympic, navy and Roughrider coins and I have them all. There will be a new 2010 poppy quarter released later this year. There were variations of the Olympic quarters.... three were colorized which was a surprise.

I've toured the Winnipeg mint a couple of times. Canada mints interesting coins and is collector friendly.

No but I do keep money from countries I visit or whatever non-standard coin I find, I found a Pre-Euro Greek coin once in my change container.

I used to collect 50 cent pieces...well it wasnt much of a hobby. I have like 30 of them that I keep hidden away. Not sure what I will do with them. Also have a few coins from Mexico

I assume, then, that you have the original red poppy and the pink breast cancer quarters?

Yes I do. The 2004 poppy and the 2008 Armistice poppy, and the 2006 breast cancer quarters. Did you know about the colorized Men's hockey, women's hockey and Cindy Klassen quarters?

I have the full set of 1992 Provincial quarters, all the 1999-2000 millenium quarters, all the crowned and uncrowned effigy coins from '03 and '04, the "W" mintmark toonies and most everything else. I have the 2009 and 2010 Canadian Tire tokens / coins also.

I knew about them but couldn't afford to buy them. I'm missing the women's hockey quarter. Just waiting for it to pop up in my change. I have all the others.

I also have the complete Canadian Centennial including the silver dollar and the paper dollar bill. I bought it on Ebay a few years ago.

I'm working on gathering the centennial coins now. I have the silver dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, cent. Just need the half-dollar and paper dollar and they will come in time.

The women's colorized hockey quarter is pretty rare and you would be more apt to get it off ebay or at a coin shop in Toronto if you're near there.

There are also 2 versions of the men's colorized quarter.... the "countersunk" date and "raised" date. The raised date is very rare and was selling for $10 upon time of released. About 170,000 minted.

Check out this site:

for descriptions of Canadian coins and estimates of prices. He's a seller but it's the most comprehensive listing of Canadian coins on the net.

All the Centennial coins and bill are available at Ebay Canada, in sets or individual coins and bills.

I've never seen the colourised Olympic coins in circulation. They were available only through the mint or through collectors.

Did you know that Canada invented the duo-metal coin (a coin within a coin) when the Toonie came out? I believe we also invented the colourised coin with the poppy quarter. Unfortunately, the original coins didn't stay colourised very long in circulation. !oops!

Thanks for the info. I have to stay away from ebay as I've been spending WAY too much lately on my collection. As I mentioned I only need a couple items to complete my centennial collection and I'll get those soon. Lately I've been working my my Canadian half-dollars and need 7 of them to complete my 1967-current run, and I'll most likely get those next month.

If you need the colorized quarters, members of the coin community I sent you the link to can trade or sell them cheaper than ebay.

Yes, I knew about the first bi-metallic coin in the toonie. I like the Nunavut and Quebec commemoratives (have them both).

Are you collecting American coins also?

Are you collecting American coins also?

Not really. A friend from Georgia started sending me the state quarters (with the keeper folder). She stopped sending them before the collection was finished. I don't even know which coins are missing. I'll have to dig it up and check.

Cowboybob I post on coin community that you posted... have been for a while. I think if you see my user name here its very similar on that forum.

I love the old cent's they are great I bought a lot of old old cents a few years ago... and bought 30 rolls of wheat cents from somebody from the 'bay about a year and a half ago for $55 - boy was that a deal when you see what wheats are selling for now... and there were a lot of indian head cents and silver dimes in those rolls as well. I just love coins they are like classic pieces of artwork when you compare the older coinage to what we use currently. George Washington would be hot if he knew we were putting political figures on coins now.

Hey, here's a CCF member!

You brought up a valid point there. I don't like using dead Presidents on coins. What happened to Miss Liberty, wildlife and Native Americans instead of Presidents on almost everything?

As for Lincoln cents, I only need the four key dates to complete my collection:

1909-S
1909 S VDB
1914-D
1931-S

They'll come in time with the exception of the 09 S VDB. The price for that is now over the top. I had the opportunity a few months ago to get a nice 31-S for $70 but passed on it. Now I wish I would have picked it up.

gsdx, the State Quarters piqued coin collecting interest in a lot of people and I wish they would have quit with that set. But in 2009 they had Territory quarters and now they started with "America the Beautiful" or state park quarters, which will be another 56 quarters to collect over 11 years. They've gone overboard with commemorative quarters the last years.
