I always call it CARNAVAL...never "CARNIVAL"...

Oh please stop that: it's a hell for me always having to adapt everything to English mispronunciation and misspelling, so do not make me revert the process now :grrr:

It's interesting that Carnaval has a certain "root word" in it (which shows up in CARNAL, for example), because after all a LOT of fucking goes on there, lol.

It's all about meat at Lent (and lentils): flesh is only an optional side dish.

This is the first night of Carnival in Nice. The arrival of the King and Queen in the centre of town.

And what is the weather like for this festive occasion? It is absolutely pissing down with rain. I should think there will be very few people with sufficient courage to go outside and line the streets to welcome them.

Wish it were so over here. Unfortunately, only some clouds veiling the sun are forecast for the whole week.

We seem to be having some kind of capitalistic / touristic carnival here.

There's banging every night at 9pm— which I assume is fireworks over the city harbour.

We used to rely on wool as our major export-earner. We have lost most of our industries to Asia.

We have to drop our pants and now rely on tourists now. :(

Oh my god Pat - and they are mainly catering to Catholic tourists then with Carnival!! It must be a horror show.

Oh no. We have simple tourists from all over the world who are overawed by fireworks in the night sky as well as our range of cuddly furry animals and penguins and wombats etc.

We don't have much culture like Spain, UK and Greece though. :(

There's that nice episode in EM Forster's A Room With View.

The dopey American tourists are visiting the great cathedrals in Italy and the dumb one says all he remembered from Florence was that was where he saw a yellow dog!!

You mean Rome

Oh, cheer up, pattie: we have lots of culture in Europe but, comparatively, scarcely any cultivation... we are closer to the Eloi civilization up here in Spain than down there in Ozland.

You mean Rome

You are right. I went to Wiki and you are right. The 'yellow dog' was in Rome.

EM Forster also used tiny details like that in Passage To India.

I forced myself to read this hoping it was based on the Forster symbol—

Although a few people have private Mardi Gras or Carnival parties and some organizations and certainly some bars, there is no citywide celebration here and Carnival means very little to me. I always associate it with Brazil and Mardi Gras with New Orleans.
