Does having your food mixed or touching bother you?

It doesn't bother me unless it's two foods that really don't look or taste good together. If the sauce from something sweet runs into something savory, I don't like that. Other than that, I'm fine.

My partner, however, despises it. He all but insists on things on separate plates. Someone found that intriguing, and worked it into a novel he was writing.

Well I wouldn't want everything stirred up together but it doesn't matter if the edges touch a bit. Tonight I had pasta marinara, asparagus and apple sauce. A little bit of the apple sauce got onto the pasta and asparagus but so what? I ate it anyway and it tasted fine.

I spoke to a chef who says the texture of food is as important as the taste, temperature, and appearance of it.

no i mush everything together, put a pad of butter and some gravy anyways......

they're all going to the same spot, might as well let them mingle together.

It depends on the food. Generally i prefer to have things separate, and to have control over what I mix on the end of my fork. Much like an artist with his palette, I don't mind blending things but I want to start from pure colours.

There's a few other odd food things which bother me~

~when food is served at the wrong temperature

~when sweet tastes are mixed with savoury on the same plate

~ in some countries where they bring dessert to table at same time as the main meal

Nope, I love mixing things

If the foods should not be touching why are they on the same plate?

A good meal has synergy. That means that when the various elements mix (in some manner) they harmonize. If a dish becomes unpalatable merely by bumping into its neighbor then those items should probably not share a plate.

Good cooking shouldn't give rise to this kind of neurotic fastidiousness, but rather the opposite, pleasure.

Yeah, it does. I can't stand when my meats get all soggy from something like collard green or corn juice.

When I was forced to eat it, I HATED when potato salad would mix with ANYTHING else on my plate.

Funny how my vote is NO, but when I was a kid I simply couldn't *STAND* having any foods mixed together...other than eggs (with soft yolks) and fried breakfast potatoes.

There are some things I do not like mixing, such as water/juice (from, perhaps, cooked veggies) getting the coating on the fried chicken all soggy and un-crisped.

The idea of having mustard and ketchup [catsup] mixed, was beyond revolting. Now sometimes I'll do that with a hamburger, though the "catsup" part nowadays is usually instead a slice of tomato.

When eating Mexican food, especially, I mix everything together.

If it's already on the same plate, then I don't see why it would matter. It seems like a frivolous thing to get flustered over, but then I have my own share of puerile idiosyncrasies, so whatever.

If I am going to eat it all, it doesn't bother me.

You get to eat both things separate then enjoy trying them both combined, texture and flavor is fun to experiment with.

What I am craving right now though is;

Boiled peas mixed with mash potato and gravy, salt and pepper. homma nom nom nom.

Mind boggling, some of these things.

How do you guys cope with a sandwich - all that bread, butter and filling touching each other already? Or something like salad or stir-fry, when it is already all mixed together? And pizza - how do you manage that? And almost all Mexican cuisine? Sushi?

And if you fob off these questions by saying these things are things which you think CAN go together, would you usually keep them separate?

I always mix my breakfast plates up (excluding toast, pancakes or waffles). Eggs over easy with some hash browns and sausage? The only thing that makes it better is a little cheese! :kevbo:
