There's an Amish community not far from here. While I don't laugh at them, I do try and play "Amish Paradise" by Weird Al every time I go past. :badgrin:

It's not surprising considering they have lead healthy lives for generations. No smoking, alcohol, mcdonalds, etc.

Ya think? I've been to some pretty wild Amish parties in my day. (No, really!!) And a few years back they busted a ring of Amish drug dealers.

Not all is as pretty as it seems in Amish land.
 
They party on the weekends here. My family knows the current generation, as my Grandma taught at their school for 30+ years and my mother went to school with them for a short period of time, picking on all the boys and calling them goulash for some odd reason.

For a group of people who are marginalized and who's rights are blocked, you'd think we'd have a better live and let live attitude. As we all know it takes balls to live differently from the norm.

Let me tell you something about the "marginalized" Amish, since I love amongst them. They are some of the wealthiest people in Pennsylvania. They own huge amounts of land, and make enormous sums of money raising animals, crops, and selling their wares to tourists. They couldn't care less about the "English" (us) giving them any rights. They are happy to be by themselves. They eat like kings, live in huge, lavish homes, and make more fun of us than we make fun of them. Believe me, if you'd hear some of the things the Amish say about us English, you would be aghast. If they wanted to change, they could. In fact, they give their youth that chance, but most of them come back. Why? Wouldn't you rather come back to a life of untold wealth, whilst amusing yourself by putting on "plain" pretense for the amusement of tourists?
 
When I was in Lancaster County, on my holiday, I couldn't help but have a giggle.

Everything was just sooo different. Cool, but different.

this must be the only incident where the "founder affect" actually gave them an advantage genetically - but then baring in mind what they eat which is enough to induce atheroma just looking at it - its probably a good thing
