Don't Pressure Me

I loved science so much during my school days that I joined the Science Club at my high school.
Here is a fun reminder of the power of air pressure.

Has he done the pressure experiment where he takes a glass of water, places a piece of paper on top, and turns the whole thing upside down?

This reminds me of one science experiment where you dangle a wad of paper or a ping pong ball from a string. Then you blow, not on the ball, but a short distance away. Surprisingly, the ball will swing toward the stream of blowing air in a perpendicular direction. The explanation was that the blowing air will pull the stationary air (the air next to the ball) with it, thus creating a vacuum which pulls the ball toward the air current created by blowing.

^ That's similar to blowing on your steaming food before putting it in your mouth. Your breath creates a lower pressure over your food and draws in cooler air surrounding it.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is just shy of 15lbs. per square inch.

And yet, a steel drum can be crushed by a difference in air pressure.
