Over the years I've seen many of Dr. Ho's commercials schlepping those electrical muscle stimulators on late night TV, and have often wondered about them. Then several months ago I was attacked by ferocious, wounded animal and, while wrestling with the creature, I tore my left rotator cuff. Even after physiotherapy my shoulder is very sore.

While at Costco the other day, I caved and bought one of those machines. It's for feet but it also comes with so much more. I hooked it up to my shoulder and did a 20 minute session and WOW!!!! This morning it feels soooooo much better. For real! I highly recommend it.

Interesting. I know those types of units have some success. What I'd like to know, is the success long term? Are you still feeling the same relief today? In a few weeks could you report back your results? Thanks.

I'm not familiar with this particular unit but the science behind electrical stimulation for pain control does have solid research behind it. Similar units are sold as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) units and as long as they are manufactured properly, they are safe to use.

There's different theories about whether it interferes with the nervous system's perception of pain (the interferential theory) or whether it triggers the body to produce endorphins that work similar to opiates to block the pain. But as with so many of these over-the-counter solutions, if it works for you, go with it.

Back in the early 80's I was in a car wreck and my insurance paid for a tens unit because of the effects of the accident on my neck and back. It worked well. Then fast forward 20 years and I had a pain in my back, I thought it to be a kidney stone. I went to my doctor and he said that it was an ulcer and put me on meds. to lower the acid output in my digestive track, it did no good. I saw at least 3 more doctors as the pain was so bad that it felt like a knife in my back. No one could find a solution. Finally in desperation I remembered the tens unit, I charged it and put the pads on areas around the pain, in a week the pain was gone and never came back. I have no idea as to what caused the pain or how the tens unit stopped it, but it did work.

Well, my rotator cuff is getting much better and I've used it for a few other minor maladies. I never imagined I'd be a fan, but there it is. Anything that helps reduce medications.

Well, six months along and I feel great. My rotator cuff hurt for over a year and that EMS machine fixed it. I actually found another maker called IQ Technologies,

and the PRO VI model is the one I bought. I do recommend EMS therapy.
