Dr. Laura Hangs Up Her Hat

I wonder if this controversy had anything to do with her retirement. Like Dr. Watson's racist commentary that led to his retirement at 79.

Coincidence?

Evidently, she's resigning because her first amendment rights are being usurped by special interest groups. What happened to taking responsibility?

Her first amendment rights have not been "taken away." Was she put in prison or executed for saying what she said? No. Just like she has the right to say the word, other people have the right to say how disgusted they are by her saying it.

I was going to say I can't believe somebody on the right actually has some class, but then I find out she's resigning just to paint herself as the victim, so she went and ruined that.

Poor Laura.... so oppressed. *snore* I'm just waiting for the Republitards to wail and snivel about it. Summon The Palin™!

Wow, how sad, a grown man posting images that only an ignorant young child would show someone.

It was reported on CNN tonight that after 17 years, chief bitch Dr. Laura has called it quits.

I honestly thought she would tough it out and stay on the air. Kinda like Don Imus, but I guess N-word > Nappy headed hoes.

Never liked her.Saw long ago she was a phony and fraud, judgemental but hypersensitive to criticism dealing with her hypocrisies. She was a moralizing scold...I won't miss her.Won't miss Dr.Phil or most of the other so called "experts" either when they call it quits,or fade away from lack of interest.

I think this once ago shows people that racism and homophobia are torn from the same cloth. I had probably braces when she said that gay BS. But it shouldn't be too shocking now that she had a slip of the tongue with blacks.

Were her comments really "disgustingly racist"?

Maybe I didn't hear the whole clip, but as I understand it, the controversy is because she used the N-word. But it wasn't in a racist context, she was talking to someone about how they were possibly being over sensitive about a race difference between her and her husban's friends, and she was using as an example in her argument that a lot of black people are constantly using the n-word, only she actually said it. I don't really think that's racist so much as it is really bold and blunt. I don't feel at all comfortable using that word personally, but someone using a word to illustrate a point doesn't make them a racist...and I'm actually in the unpopular camp that does believe that you as a race can't tell another race which words to use, especially if a large percentage of your own race uses the word so liberally.

And, maybe my audio was off but it sounded to me like she said the igga version. I thought that that was supposed to be a much less offensive term. I don't know though...it's all really stupid to me.

When I was growing up, we didn't have tv so I was all about some talk radio and her's was one of the few stations that came in. I didn't agree with a lot of what she said, but I do think that she was really honest about her beliefs and stuck to them even if they weren't popular and I respect that.

From the Los Angeles Times...

"When I first started out in radio," she said, "people would disagree — they disagreed, they didn't hate. They didn't try to censor, they didn't try to destroy an opposing point of view. Instead, they just argued and debated, and argued and disagreed, and debated and argued." Now, she continued, "self-appointed activist types breed hate, breed anger, breed destruction should anyone hold up a mirror or dare to disagree." She added that the phenomenon could be observed in all aspects of society, from politics to education to the workplace.

Awfully hypocritical, coming from someone who used a hate-charged racial epithet over and over to make a point...

Y'know, at one time I thought she should be respected for speaking her mind unashamedly. Time told, though ... like Sausy said, she turned out to be quick to judge, slow to empathize, hypocritically defensive when someone criticized her own hypocrisy, and certainly not someone to emulate.

I don't think what she said was "disgustingly racist"...it was blunt and harsh.

She was making a point about how over-sensitive some people are with race while at the same time a large percentage of people use that specific word extremely liberally and without thought or reprecussions.

I don't feel comfortable using that word, but I do agree with her point. One group of people can't decide what another group isn't allowed to say. Especially if so many members of the same group use the word frequently.

I don't agree with a lot of what she's said in the past, but I do think that she's always been very straight forward about her beliefs and she's stood by them even when they weren't popular. And I respect that, even if I don't respect the actual message.

After being allowed to say the n-word repeatedly on air and I have heard no charges that the FCC is at all taking any action, she declares her first amendment rights were taken away? How could she get any *more* first amendment rights?

Another poster child for the whining, whinging homophobic/racist shock-jock media.

Now. Hopefully Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh will be the next to throw themselves upon their sword.

I've not heard that she was leaving radio..
If this is true, well I will miss her program..
I listened rarely.. only when I was in my car going to and from work or on my lunch break.. but I always thought she gave sound and good advice..

Always made sense to me what she told the folks that called her..

Seems to me she spoke of personal responsibility, always being open and communicating with your partner, was for adoption rather than for abortion..
I see nothing wrong with any of those views.

Not sure why she is hated so much by the previous posters.

Dr. Laura says stupid things, and yet Sarah Palin is still popular. I'll never figure that one out.

Good riddance. One less hate monger in the media. Now let's get rid of Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, O' Reilly, Hannity, Gingrich, Boehner, McConnell.

I don't give a fuck what she does. But her claim that she somehow lost her first amendment rights is false, and a recurring theme of the biggest bullies and assholes when they go too far.
