Dr. Laura Hangs Up Her Hat

Wow, how sad, a grown man posting images that only an ignorant young child would show someone.

Laika -- I'll say it again - you're a pathetic little person. Also, like I've said before, if the cunt fits wear it. And you wear it so well.

Guess, I missed it. I don't and never have listened to her.

She said the "n" word . . . you mean . . .nigger?

All you have to do is listen to hiphop radio - you'll hear it every 30 seconds.

What's the big deal.

The same reason why a gay comedian can say the word 'faggot' till he/she's blue in the face, but let some mega-church minister start spouting it when pontificating against our civil rights on a news interview and they will catch shit for it.

If you had a neighbor who always referred to you as 'the faggot' (the caller's neighbor kept using the word 'nigger' around her), would you take that in the same context as Margaret Cho doing her act?

I've not heard that she was leaving radio..

One link grabbed at random:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2010/aug/18/freedom-of-speech-usa

If this is true, well I will miss her program..
I listened rarely.. only when I was in my car going to and from work or on my lunch break.. but I always thought she gave sound and good advice..

Always made sense to me what she told the folks that called her..

Seems to me she spoke of personal responsibility, always being open and communicating with your partner, was for adoption rather than for abortion..
I see nothing wrong with any of those views.

When I listened to her back in college, I'd have agreed with you 100%. My problem with her, and with the so-called "racist" bit, was that she'd gotten increasingly rude, increasingly in-your-face, less willing to listen, etc. Even in the mid-90s, though, she was starting to show her bigotry: her views on what to do with gay kids were less than savory, for example.

She did emphasize personal responsibility, and that's a voice we need. But we need it from someone who treats her callers with respect.

Not sure why she is hated so much by the previous posters.

Because she's not a by-the-book liberal. Most of the left-wing sorts I knew in college who didn't like her objected to her insistence that people face the full consequences of her actions -- like on a bit where some caller mentioned an "unexpected pregnancy" and Dr. L said, "Don't talk nonsense -- there's no such thing." The names she was called over that were revealing of the speakers (as are many of the comments about her here revealing of the writers) and added nothing to discourse, especially since she was in fact right: if you have (hetero) sex, expect a pregnancy.

No one who hammers on bald, unsoftened personal responsibility will be liked by many. But in this case, if she'd been honest, she would have quit as a way of taking personal responsibility for the fact that she could no longer treat all callers with respect. That "first amendment rights" bit was the same sort of evasive crap she jumped on others for.

You're calling him pathetic for pouncing on a post that's sub-Beck? as in farther in the gutter than Glen Beck would go?

I'd only call him pathetic for being so mild about it.

BTW, I'll take the opportunity here to note that a good number of the posts in this thread descend farther into immature, unthinking, bigoted mindless blather than anything Dr. Laura ever did.

How are her first amendment rights being violated? She has used the airwaves for years to denounce gays.

But she wasn't calling the woman 'the n------', she was making a point about how people of one group can't limit the vocabulary of another while at the same time embracing the word if used by their own group. And she was right. It's more racist than a word with no racial intention behind it by far.

Even though she's now quiting because of it, she really proved her point, we are as a society way too racially sensitive.

Please don't call people you disagree with "cunts". Grow up ..|

Why is it that conservatives claim to defend the constitution so much and then don't actually understand it?

I remember hearing Carrie Prejean going on about how Perez Hilton took away her "first amendment rights" too. Apparently she thinks that it's in the constitution that she has the right to win a beauty pageant.

Sarah Palin doesn't understand what the constitution says either. She get very upset when the press were calling her out on her lies... she thought that the 1st amendment protected her from having to defend what she said.

And now Dr. Laura thinks that the first amendment is supposed to force companies to sponsor her show even if she's becoming the crazy old cat lady who just rants incoherently.

Just like Anne Coulter, she's had to ramp it up and be MORE shocking to keep herself in the public eye. Sadly, all of the women above are just self-parodies now. Carrie Prejean is the punchline to an unfunny joke, Sarah Palin's fanbase is rabid but shrinking and her new "mama grizzly" movement is laughable at best. Most people had forgotten about Dr Laura (who isn't a medical doctor, by the way... she's a gym teacher with a doctorate) until she started to go off like a crazy old lady.

Anne Coulter's books sell fewer and fewer now that she's competing with the Palins and the Becks of the world.

WRONG and WRONG!

She proved no point, save to her group of racist, wingnuts that support her.

And only white people on the wingnut fringe think the US is too "racially sensitive".

A word by itself is not racist. Nor does it make the person who said it a racist. There needs to be intention behind it and there was none.

I think that we as a nation are too sensitive when it comes certain words. When does it stop...are we only going limit the speech of groups when it comes to race, or is religion and sexual orientation, and sex, and age, and social clique, and people who wear socks with sandals allowed to mandate what's ok and not ok for others to say?

People like MLK would be ashamed that the 'N' word is thrown around so often in the black community.

You forgot Michelle Bachmann, the only elected wingnut wench w/ national exposure as an idiot.

Republicans anymore are filled with racists, homophobes, Islamaphobes, uneducated white trash, and sometimes a few of the above at the same time, if not all.

The Republicans really have done a stellar job at wooing white people with very little education beyond high school. They thought, "hey, let's get stupid people to buy our insane reasoning of tax cuts will somehow help them, even being poor", as they laugh amongst themselves in the men's club smoking cigars. They kept all their positions explainable in 30 seconds or less, so sound bytes became crucial. Without talking points these people have nothing. If you have them in an airplane sitting next to you, they are out of material before the plane even leaves the tarmac. Their entire political knowledge averages 15 minutes total. That's it. They have no idea about history of any of the countries in question. Nor the social programs. Nor the USA's own history.

You do have a very small portion of those self-proclaimed conservatives that are wealthy and just wanting to avoid taxes, which hey, I get. No one likes paying taxes, but it is the cost of a pleasant society. But these people are probably only 10% to 15% of conservatives.

Isn't it ironic that in a thread about a person getting in trouble for a racial remark, someone of a different ethnicity comes in and attacks others as "white trash"

Larry King said it best last night. It is the freedom of speech for to detractors to protest against her. And she replied by saying he's missing the point.

No, woman, he used your own logic against you. You can say what you want and so can the people that find your comments asinine.

Stop it! Stop trying to twist my words and changing the subject. I said that her resignation "proved no point" as you claimed was the case. She did nothing of the sort. She lost advertisers and was facing the possibility of being fired and replaced vs. retiring. So she retired. BFD. The US being "too racially sensitive" wasn't the point she proved. She proved she's a has been, old, anachronism, whereby being white bestowed an automatic privilege to say and do anything they want and having multiple advantages of society. Those days are gone, and rightfully so! She's embittered for having to deal with homos, blacks, hispanics, and other groups. She repeatedly states the US "needs to return to the 1950s mores and ethics".

"Dr." Laura is the poster child of the dying gasp of the WASP culture the US is moving beyond.

Why do you feel such a compelling need to be able to say "nigger" or any other racially charged word?

Agreed. And her whining about her 1st amendment rights as well as her hate monger followers is laughable!

Her 1st amendment "rights" weren't being abridged. How fucking hard is it for people to understand that other individuals or groups of people cannot abridge your 1st amendment rights! Only the government can! The Constitution's 1st amendment reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

America's education system really does suck.

Well good! She shot off her mouth and ended up killling her career.

Now, if we can only do something about Russ Limbaugh.

The word nigger is racist.

Whether used by whites or blacks.

It wasn't up to 'Dr'. (HAHAHAHAHA) Laura to demean and diminish her caller's sensitivity by going on and on about why it is okay for black 'gangstas' to use the word nigger when talking among themselves and why somehow that gave her the right to dismiss the problems that an African
American woman has with people using it.

The fact is, 'Dr'. (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) Laura got so caught up in her little rant that she simply and utterly failed her caller and her audience. As she has done on many occasions before.

The people of African descent that I know don't call one another nigger. They don't tolerate others of any race using that word in their presence. Granted, they are educated and more urbane instead of 'urban', but I think that the vast majority of people of African descent find the term repugnant and unacceptable and are offended that the 'DR' (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) is somehow trying to desensitize people to its use.

So. To conclude.

The shock jock who lost her sponsorships and her show because she had a Helen Thomas moment in her dotage can go away now and write a book that will no doubt become another book in the new conservative bible or she can just be a bigger person, apologize for having offended her audience and then go away and quietly expire in silence.

Whatever.
