'Duck Dynasty' Under Fire Following Star's Incendiary Anti-Gay Remarks

A quick glance through about.com reveals the legal age to marry is either 15 or 16 with parental consent in all 50 states. Just going by language used on about.com it might actually even be legal for one partner to be 15 or 16, and the other 18+. Their language of "if either of you are under 18" definitely hints at that anyway.

Mary was younger than that when she married Joseph IIRC.

Some sources suggest the average life expectancy in that era (excluding infant and childhood mortality) was maybe 40 years.

Life expectancy up through the 19th century was about 40 years in much of the world so far as I know. I was just watching a BBC documentary that mentioned that as being the typical life expectancy through the Victorian period in England. But yeah, I'm definitely cognizant that in the ancient and even medieval world, even in much of the premodern world, sexual maturity was old enough for marriage in many cultures, including the west. Certainly I'm not aware of any widespread artificial rule about waiting until 18 until modern times.

Misleading statistic that is average age of death. If you survived to adulthood, the average life expectancy shot up to 60.

While his Jim Crow comments were vile,I'm SICK and tired of being told it's okay to compare us to pedophiles, terrorists and other things because the Bible says it's okay.
Sorry,I don't follow your religion and resent being told I have to be respectful of people that tell me I'm going to burn in hell.
Sorry to say but this whole incident shows us we have a long, long way to go.

Glad to see the thread back and clean. Thank you opinterph. Sorry for making it difficult.

One Direction's Liam Payne tweeted support today for Duck Dynasty's Willie Robinson. Seems Liam is a fan of "family values."

It's interesting that no one has started a thread about the Bachelor on ABC.
