  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

No Animated GIFs Duck Fuc**** Dynasty has ruined my Christmas!

Funny no one at my work has mentioned them. Friends I hang with weekly loves the show and one of my closest coworker is a HUGE fan of their show but no one has mentioned it, at least to me. Granted I'm not as upset about it as most, mainly because I could give a damn about him or the show, and I haven't brought it up. They win either way it plays out, they are making him out like a victim and therefore they are buying up their shit in droves and watching the show each time it plays. Now I read he is now back on the show after A&E and the family talked to special interest groups, etc etc. Again, I just with I could turn on the tv daily and see someone go on about straight people living together unmarried are going to hell and having babies out of wedlock and are spitting in "god's" face as much they carry on about gay people.

Don't forget eating shellfish and wearing clothes made of two different fabrics.

Is the topic not sufficient to argue? You must create a straw man to enable you to have the upper hand merely by imputation and smear?

Because if you and Lex weren't so insufferably ignorant and uncaring you'd know about people like this kid.

Phil Robertson made me feel unsafe in my own home': Gay Louisiana student writes powerful anonymous letter to Duck Dynasty star in wake of homophobic comments

But you don't, and it's obvious, because the only time you people do care to weigh in on a gay issue is to defend these assholes.

That's not debate. It's attack and insult. For shame.

Thanks, but in light of what HAS been said in defense of people whom reinforce cultural hatred and push gay youth to suicide, both of your sorry asses deserve to be spoken to this way, so take it and shut the fuck up.

Now A&E, on the advice of people in this very thread even, has decided to reinforce the cultural attitude that LGBT prejudice is perfectly tolerable and should be on television.

Oh but nevermind that another gay kid has hanged himself in his closet. Congratulations, you must feel *so* proud.

There are really only two kinds of people who think this kind of viewpoint going out en masse in society or over the airwaves should be protected: people who secretly share those views, and people with the misguided notion that speech has utterly no power. Someone has the right to express any opinion they want under the Constitution, but someone having views like these, expressing them publicly/on-air, and having them tacitly supported via a church or network paying them money to be on the air voicing them, and having no repercussion for doing so sends out a message about the legitimacy of these viewpoints. Every bigoted redneck who watches Duck Dynasty now feels more vindicated in their views as something mainstream and acceptable.

The proper response to voices espousing racism and homophobia and all else isn't to ban them out right - it's to counter them. To explain why those vantage points are wrong. I mean, you CAN do that, can't you? Because if you can't, maybe you need to take another look at your stances.

Lex

That is all well and good if these were the type of folks who would actually sit down and listen to a counter point and consider the opinions. But they're not, they rather stomp their feet and sticking their fingers in their ears. People are set in their views a lot of the time, when it comes to people like him (boo-hoo I am stereotyping) they are not going to change. So the next thing to do for me, is to cut them off.

These people are wrong and these are not opinions or points of views they have, it is hatred. But people are OK with it because they try to disguise it under religion. I will be less inclined to take any kind of power they have away from them once we're equal and their hateful kind is treated as the minority.

Bingo. Such comments aren't going to change anyone's mind, but they sure do urge the "troops" on.

O.K. I don't expect any of you at this late hour to care much, but I'm about to say some extremely extreme things to people in the morning because I have been subjected to an entire evening of why that bigot on the stupid show was supposedly ruined.

What offends me most and has kept me up is that they can defend this asshole an turn to me and tell themselves that since they love me so It's Baffling why I'm so unreasonable.

I nearly told one of my sisters to go fuck herself -but I restrained myself.

which is another issue. Why must I restrain MYSELF!

OK yes I know, and so do you, and y'all understand. It's three in the morning and I can't sleep I'm so offended.

I'm seriously considering getting in my car and going home. I would rather spend the rest of Christmas alone than deal with what I'm going to have to say to people I really trusted before this.

It is a shock that my own family - after all these years - would side with the bigot. Am I missing something? Is there some mitigating circumstance?

I've been sitting up unable to sleep feeling betrayed. Isa that wrong?

If a silly little white trash reality show affects you this much (or in any way for that matter) - life is gonna knock you down. Toughen up and ignore what needs to be ignored...

You're right - they won't go out looking for a counterpoint. And that's why I keep harping on my desire to make an episode where gay people show up to visit. Because it would put a counterpoint in front of them, in a forum they're already tuned in to. Removing him from the show simply makes the ignorant feel that they're under attack. (Which they are - just not for the reasons they believe.) I can't imagine anybody who thought as he did had their mind changed by having him suspended. "I used to think gays were bad people, but now that the network suspended this guy for saying so, I guess they're not so bad"? No, I don't think that happened anywhere.

But the stars of the show are upfront about how the show works. "The network comes up with ideas on what we can do, and then we just do them." Perfect. Have a busload of gay guys go visit. Force interaction. Have them see the humanity behind the vilified name. And no, not everyone watching will rush out to join PFLAG. But I'm guessing it'll do a lot more than simply booting him off the show would accomplish.

You guys are laying on your backs and allowing yourself to be victims with this type of reactions. "Duck Dynasty, Finding Bigfoot, Small Town Sherriff, "any word here" Wars, "any word here" Struggle....WTF!? Why do these shows affect you in any way at all. It is white trash's 15 minutes... that is all.

Why does this nonsense affect you at all?

Don't you guys find it obvious though if any reality show star had to get involved in this sort of 'scandal' with whatever motive behind it, it had to be Duck Dynasty? These men look like Neanderthals with Barbie like wives and backward views that cater to a specific type of people. The type of people that do not understand, don't want to and simply hate us.

Because people are paying attention to it and being told that it's okay to say such things.

Wrong. People could care less. What was the most controversial reality TV show of 2010?

YOU give it power by elevating it. Do not blame others for your own ignorance....

I have no idea what the most controversial reality show was in 2010. I don't watch any of them. I didn't even know what Duck Dynasty was about until this controversy. I was simply answering a question about why this nonsense would affect me. If anything, I'm blaming those people who believe Phil for their and his ignorance... not mine.

Stop wasting your life like this. Do not let silly things like reality TV affect your life...

I have to disagree about the "two camps"...it is far more complex that that.

Free speech is a principle and I think people forget that restricting free speech opens a Pandora's Box because what people define as "obscene" or "a threat" can change drastically in a few generations and as gay men we should know better...look at what has happened recently in Russia...and now India....gay men have been considered a threat to society across the world and existing in silence has been necessary historically and in many places in the world it still is.......

I think allowing people to express whatever opinion they have is essential. ...and that includes the response to the opinions...free speech goes both ways.

I have long defended the Westboro Church even though I hate them and I firmly believe that they have helped public opinion shift more in favor of Gay marriage than anyone else. Hatred like theirs is a much needed mirror for a lot of people who need to see who they are...or what they have become.

When you bring something out in the open and put it on the table it opens up much needed dialogue...like this one...

....many things do not grow in the dark...and that would include public opinion. These people serve as catalysts for everyone....let them. If we seek to restrict their right to free speech we create a sympathetic figure and that is exactly what the right wing wants us to do...let's not help them.

What exactly gives you the idea that I'm upset? I'm more upset being accused by you of being upset when I'm not. I do wish people would stop telling me what I'm thinking and feeling.

Besides, if you read my post, you would have known that I don't watch those types of shows. They don't affect my life at all except by wasting viewing time when other more interesting programmes could be broadcast. That's why I haven't watched A&E for many years now since this silly 'reality TV' fad caught on.

The comments had nothing to do with the reality tv. And they weren't even made on the show.
