The way they keep changing formats Blu-Ray will probably be replaced by something else in 2 years. I can't see investing in Blu-Ray at this time. I'd probably get one though if I needed a new player, but don't right know.

For me it depends on availability of desired titles as well as pricing. So I am buying both.

For example: In 2009, I bought a few Criterion Collection titles in both formats [http://www.criterion.com]: on Blu-ray I now have The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008; David Fincher), El Norte (1983; Gregory Nava), and Howards End (1992; James Ivory); on DVD I now have even more titles like Downhill Racer (1969; Michael Ritchie), The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973; Peter Yates), Miss Julie (1951; Alf Sjöberg), Missing (1982; Costa-Gavras), My Dinner with André (1981; Louis Malle), White Dog (1982; Samuel Fuller), and Z (1969; Costa-Gavras).

I haven't been disappointed. But there are some titles worth upgrading to Blu-ray. Or, if a title is released in both formats (and there isn't a substantial price difference), I recommend the Blu-ray format.

I buy DVD's but that's largely because I have a Kaleidescape Movie System and you can't import BD's to it. But the Kaleidescape upscales to 1080p and having compared like for like on the few BD's I do have, there's very little noticeable difference. If they bring out a BD import device, I'll consider upgrading but as another poster said, BD's are too expensive at the moment.....

Sorry, but I love that you own a K and have the nuts to talk about BD being too expensive.

As for BD vs. SD, my bf has already started in on the BDs (both for new releases and replacing the other 3000+ SD DVDs we own) so I guess that is that.

We got a blu ray player for a year now and mostly everything we buy is blu ray. I only buy dvds if it's a movie I don't really care seeing in HD or the reviews on picture quality isn't good.
There are a lot of blu rays that are cheaper than the dvd and we're seeing a big price drop now. I bought the latest Harry Potter for $16 at Best Buy and it included a dvd version too vs the regular dvd version (2 disc) which was $23.

I buy DVD's more often. And no I don't think Blu-Ray will overtake.

Unless they drop in price dramatically. The jump from VHS was, in my opinion, necessary. The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray is insubstantial - HDTV? For films where people already look real?

Seems very unnecessary to me.

You are right about the leap being pretty huge from VHS to DVD and not as large from DVD to Bluray. However once you begin watching a lot of HDTV and a lot of Bluray movies and then try to go back and watch a DVD or standard def tv, you start to notice the difference and quite honestly, despise Standard def.

I think once HDTV's become as common as the standard television in everyone's homes and HD becomes the standard, Blu ray will win out.

This is provided that we aren't force fed another video format within the next few years, which is what I think it will still take for this all to catch on.

I mostly buy Blu Rays nowadays. The quality is amazing, and definately worth the upgrade. Even older films like "The Wizard Of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind" look absolutely breathtaking. I still buy DVDs if no Blu Ray version is available and I really want the title. Upscaled DVDs do look really quite good on my HDTV.

I buy DVD's cause I don't have HD tv, and also DVD's are much cheaper than Blu-Ray.

The extra features only on BR is a little shady but pretty good business.
It was easy to support that with the DVD upgrade because obviously VHS tapes couldn't have that.
Ha, I still love my VHS's though!

Some DVD's are cheap. But I saw District 9 on Blu-Ray for 19 dollars the same price as it is for the DVD version so not much difference in price when it comes to new movies. I have seen some 9 dollar Blu-Ray movies just gotta know where to look.

I think HDTV's are really common from where I'm sitting - I have four of them just in my house.

We have 2 PS3's as well so that's 2 Blu-Ray players - I've bought one Blu-Ray movie which is Final Fantasy, so CGI and japanese. I don't know if there's actually a difference because I can't tell. If I ever find a film I want in Blu-Ray that's cheap then no doubt I'll pick it up and see if i can tell the difference.

DVD I have to say is still where I am at. BluRay am not feeling yet still need the HD TV and the Player and DVD is so much of a better price :)

So I will not be moving over to BluRay anytime soon...
