East Coast USA Earthquake

The earthquake disturbed my relaxing bubble bath. I thought that the tub was going to fall through the floor.

5.8 is a relatively small quake for those on the west coast. We are trained to drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops. I was so surprised to read how so many ran into the streets so quickly. We evacuate the buildings once the shaking stops and get ready for aftershocks. It is frightening to have the ground move under your feet if you never experienced it. This too shall pass nut of course there's a hurricane on the way.

I was in a high rise at the beach here by the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. The building starts swaying back and forth and im like, "whats this?".

not to sound insensitive, but was there anyone else here in the West coast laughing their ass off at how the east coasters were overreacting? I got that all day on the bus/BART/work/school.

Usually if there is a natural disaster where there usually isn't one, people will freak out.... As I would if there was even a small earthquake here. Since I've never been through one.

Natural disasters really wouldn't freak me out. A tornado would be physically impossible here, considering the amount of trees and hills... we're too high up for floods... so the only thing we could really get unexpectedly would be a hurricane, and even that would be sadly diminished once it reached over the mountains. Volcanoes, earthquakes and forest fires? Used to em. That's the west coast for ya.

Ah. Well I live in the uneventful Oregon and the most "exciting" thing we get here is tons of rain.

So I imagine once I make the move to Cali and there is an earthquake I will probably freak out until someone smacks me and tells me to calm down. Haha, I'm normally a calm person, but I've never been through anything like that. So I guess I really don't know and could just not care.

In a deep slumber yes at 150.... i tbought it was my bf being a dick moving the bed....no where to be found....interesting ten seconds of my life tosay the least....i immediately tried contactin fam in nj.....could not..i am very curious wut happens wen a strong one is felt....most of the building codes in this area arent made for quakes...scary thought

I found out that actually buildings in NYC, recent ones anyway, are built to withstand a certain amount of seismic activity. It's rare, but it does happen, so they actually have earthquake codes (albeit not as stringent as California's).

Live and learn.

Nah, it's the Tea Bagger's FAULT!

That's only part true, after what's happening with the budget, Tea Party politics holding poor people hostage, etc., I think the earthquake was caused by the Founding Fathers rolling in their graves.

I don't think the East Coast overreacted at all. Between what fears were there, and even more so the fact that this was a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon for most of the people who experienced it, and because it shook the principal political and financial hubs, it got a LOT of notice...

My parents in CT said they felt it, but I didn't :( Feeling left out

I live in brooklyn and I didnt feel it im my area either. My friend felt it at work and I told him the same thing that I feel left out. Crossing my fingers to catch an aftershock :)
