$50 Lesson

I recently asked my neighbors' little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do? '

She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'

Her parents beamed with pride.

'Wow...what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that! You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.'

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?'

I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party & Conservative values.'

What if I don't want the homeless guy anywhere near my lawn? What of nobody else does? What if he's not qualified to mow lawns? How is he to get the $50?

But I guess the answer is simple - he doesn't get it and starves to death. Welcome to the Republican Party & Conservative values.

There is an assumption in the opening post that homeless people are reluctant to work to feed themselves, and pay for accommodation.

It has been my experience with homeless people that they lost their accommodation because they lost their employment, and salary to pay the rent and that an employer will not offer work to them because they are homeless, and obviously in need of a shower, square meal and a place to live.

Most cities have shelters where they can shower, get a meal and sleep. They need help, but should not be allowed to make charity dependence a permanent way of life. We need to free up some jobs they can handle, but you don't want to hear about that.

Homeless shelters are often overcrowded in most US cities. Homeless shelters are quite often very dangerous places to be also, and many homeless people avoid them: it's often safer to sleep on the street than in a room full of other troubled people who are likely to steal from you, or worse.

Of course the whole "there are shelters" line also avoids the reality of many homeless people: often as victims of mental illness, damaged lives, or post traumatic stress disorder, many homeless people are simply incapable of seeking and adhering to the same structure and routine that many of us take for granted in our lives. Much as some like to paint the homeless as lazy and "charity dependent", homelessness is a complex issue which requires compassion and patience, rather than arrogance and lack of understanding.

Approximately one third of the homeless in the US are military veterans, and an estimated 1.5 million additional US veterans are considered at risk of becoming homeless in the near future.

This.

It's the right wing's assumption that the homeless and poor are lazy and don't want to work. It's easy to make these assumptions when you drive quickly by them in your Mercedes, live high up in the hills and don't have to see how they have to live.

Reagan's deregulation of institutions threw thousands of mentally handicapped people out into the streets. Ronald Reagon the champion of modern conservatism was the start of this country's downfall..

'Welcome to the Republican Party & Conservative values.' I say.....

Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?

There was a business nearby when I was in college that put on an addition, mostly for supply rooms. In the back they added a restroom with a shower. The shower room had an interesting arrangement: there was a door to the outside, and a door to the storerooms. The door to the storerooms had an exterior security door on it with the same code entry lock as those on the outside of the building. The door to the outside didn't have a lock.

It didn't take too long for the homeless folks down the street to figure it out.

I think the humour in the post is funny. It is humour that works without including any reference to politics. Sort of like, aha, clever little girl.
Obviously a republican that thought it up (or just added the extra bits). The opposite view of course, is that the little girl was all talk and no action, so the humour works just as well if you swap the Lib Dem and Repub roles around.

Lol, you are so right! The little girl is so charmingly compassionate until she realises that the lazy-assed homeless guy can work for a child's odd-job wage and she can stay home and not feel bad about him. God bless America! (So longs as you are patriotic enough to wear a flag pin.) :-)

Or you outsource the labor and hire a 7 year old Chinese boy to do it for 50 cents.

Then the little girl fires the Chinese boy and hires a 2 year old Indian girl to do double the work for 5 cents, thereby increasing profits. Her daddy rewards her hard work with a $50 bonus, a bike, and access to the executive washroom at Chuck E Cheese. The Indian girl gets her pay and hours cut, while the Chinese boy gets deported by INS.

Apparently the little girl was too stupid to understand that about 90% of the homeless have significant mental health problems that prevent them from obtaining work. While many of them used to be contained in asylums, they are now in the community.

I wonder why the writer is so oblivious to the reality of homeless people that he wouldn't have explained this simple fact to the little girl.

So little girl. Don't be so fucking presumptuous next time.

Oh yeah. And welcome to the Republican Party. And their conservative values.

The quoted part I agree with. Very simple, elementary, answers to complicated questions. Here it is as usual implied that the homeless or poor are lazy , drunk, drug addicts will won't even do brainless work to support themselves but looking for hand outs.
Moves all the people who are the majority in this group down and out into the minority or are very visible , and that would be the drunks and homeless people that often make the news or cause problems for local business owners.
Sort of like saying all gay guys are exactly what you see in Rupauls drag Race when you push all homeless or poor people into being worthless, lazy, stumble drunks.
The real lesson here would be when the writer falls from grace due to some major medical crisis, loss of income, or life changing disaster and joins the ranks of the poor or homeless.

On the contrary, it suggests that many are capable of working and the solution is not charity and dependence but to make jobs available to them.
