Why wait for the exercise, weight lifting program? Get yourself to the doctor for a physical and lab report. Get the doctor's opinion as to your status and target weight range. Thank your parents for their concern, but talk to them with the results of your physical as backup. Good luck. Congrats on your weight loss and remember to be realistic in you goals.

Soreknees hit it just right. Get the physical and share the results with your parents. Then start doing the gym thing to build up the muscle. As an overweight person(all of my life) I know that the self image thing is a big problem. As long as you are healthy, do what you need to do to make yourself happy.

40 lbs of weight loss in one year is quite a bit. How did you lose the weight?

It is time to start a weight training program. However, to see results from weight training, you will have to have a healthy diet and for someone who is 6'4", that will mean eating quite a bit more calories.

Here is some actual advice from someone who has anorexia.

1. Your BMI is 22 you need to be lower then 18.5 before you even reach a diagnostic requirement of anorexia
2. Anorexia is a refusal to eat and to maintain a normal body weight
3. Your parents will notice major changes simply because they've been use to you being quite overweight and the fact your now slim "sorry 185lbs your not skinny" they're gonna have to get use to that.
4. Each time they see you your gonna look slimmer, simply because they've most likely forgot what you looked like last time they saw you, so it would appear you've lost weight

What? 40 pounds in a year is hardly anorexic material. You can healthily lose 2 pounds a week. Over the course of a year that's approximately 104 pounds. I fail to see why that's shocking. >.<

It depends on where the person started from. A 225 pound 6'4" guy is a big guy but is not necessarily overweight. If he started with a high body fat percentage and lost 40 pounds, that's one thing. But if he was lean and lost 40 pounds, that's not good.

Moderate exercise (I walk everywhere, I live on a huge university campus) and new eating habbits....I just started eating less crap....I run 3-4 times a week for ~30 mins then stretch and crunches and stuff and then eat lunch. Usually I eat dinner around 9pm because that is when I get back to my dorm.

It sounds like you have reduced your carb intake and started exercising. That's a good thing.

It's unusual for freshmen to lose weight, so it's even more of an accomplishment.

as long as you don't skip lunch and dinner and eat enough to sustain your body weight (do a search for weight loss calorie calculator), then you're fine. eating is about nutrients. If you're not getting enough nutrients and fuel for exercising, then that's not healthy. but yes, you most likely don't have an eating disorder.

I get the same kind of comments every time I cut weight. When you're actively dieting, especially as your body fat drops, you'll look particularly gaunt because your body has lost a lot of its water weight.

If you eat a big mac, wait 12 hours, and look like a million bucks, you're still good. If you can't force yourself to eat or still look like a starving bum afterwards, you might be anorexic.

I just started eating less crap. I only drink water with the occasional soda or sports drink, and I cut out any snacking after dinner, my greatest downfall in high school. I don't eat breakfast but that is just a habit I've had my whole life because it makes my stomach hurt all morning to eat/drink anything before 10 or 11.

I feel great after running and eating a good salad and I love where my body is going, but it inst there yet. I really want to get my first boyfriend soon here (lol I know planning for it is stupid) and I want to look good.
The time to find your boyfriend is NOW. If you think you need to be "perfect" first, then maybe you DO have a problem you need to address.

BMI is not an accurate determination of body fat to lean mass ratio. It is strictly based on height to weight. There are many perfectly lean guys out there that, according to their BMI, are considered overweight, despite being in amazing shape. It's all relative to how much body fat you have in relation to lean muscle mass.

I'm 185 freaking lbs not a scrawny 90lb anorexic. I still have lots of fat on my body I don't think they understand at all?

You should try doing a Navy Body Fat measurement. It's arguably even more effective than the skin fold test. Contrary to popular belief, you do NOT want to have 0 body fat, as you need some degree of it to survive. A healthy target for body fat percentage for men is around 15-17%, but if you want muscles to show you need to get it down to about 10-12%. This would mean at your current weight, if your body fat percentage is considered 'healthy' or 'acceptable' you should have about 27 - 31 pounds of body fat. If you wanted to show muscles you'd want to have that down to about 18 - 22 pounds which is MORE than acceptable.

To do this body fat test all you need is a tape measure. Since you're a guy, all you would need to measure is your waist circumference horizontally at your navel, and your neck below your larynx (Adam's apple) with a slight downward curve to the tape measure to go with the curve of your neck but don't flare your neck out or suck your stomach in when you take these measurements.

There are calculators out there that allow you to input these to get your exact measurements. Since your current weight and height also play a factor in this in addition to the measurements, you can get the most accurate estimation here instead of just ballparking it.

This one is my favorite: http://www.webcalcsolutions.com/Fitness-Calculators/Body-Fat-Navy.asp?AcctNum=3

Make sure you check male for gender, as there is a third measurement that women have to do for hips that men don't have to, and if you accidentally entered a hip measurement you would get an inaccurate result.
