I currently watching this movie on Bravo called "American Heart" starting Jeff Bridges and Edward Furlong from 1992. When it comes to Furlong I guess I've seen a lot of his movies. He possess an unusual trait that only a few actors possess and yet some how have earned more then one movie roll. No matter what movie he's in or what character he plays Edward Furlong ALWAYS PLAYS Edward Furlong. No matter what the part its always the same. He dosne't change anyting, in fact it always seems that he's wearing the same clothes as well (now that I think about it). It's the same case with Christopher Walken, no matter what he's in, he's always Christopher Walken ..... the Actor and the Character are one in the same.

I've noticed this with Furlong and Walken but I think that Adam Sandler, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, and Owen Wilson are all in the same boat. Are there any other actors / actresses that always seem the same regardless of the part they play in each movie?

Well,

He's not a 'character actor', he basically plays himself in every role.
(Like Nicholson, for example)

But, I think he's very gifted, and very much 'a star', in that you can't take
your eyes off of him when he's on the screen.

He's got that 'something'.

Yes, I agree.

I think like most actors, he has been somewhat type cast. Many of the characters he has played have been the same type of character, therefore he has played it the same. His role and performance in Detroit Rock City was substantially different that in American Heart. I haven't seen many of his movies, therefore I may not be the best judge. From what I have seen, I think he brings a unique compassion to his roles. There are only a handful of actors that have played a variety of roles with truly unique performances.

Along the lines of your point, I think Nicholas Cage is the king of playing every role the same. To me I always see Nicholas Cage playing a role, I never buy into the character. I'm amazed that he has landed so many leading roles. It's not that I don't like him, it's just that I don't believe the roles.

I think Nicolas Cage has played a wide variety of roles. Have you seen Raising Arizona or Bringing out the Dead?

Yes, I have seen both and to me it is Nicholas Cage trying to play the role. He never makes me believe that he is actually the character. Maybe it's just me. Obviously this can't be the same for everybody or he wouldn't get the roles that he gets.

Vette,

I'm going to agree with you on Nicholas Cage. I understand what your saying about him. He always seems to play himself on the screen, however you never truly buy that he "is"what he portrays.

Eddie Murphy in the 80's. No matter what movie, it was always Eddie Murphy in front of a camera. It wasn't until The Nutty Professor that he was actually able to convince me he was the character instead of Eddie Murphy.

I think that in most cases the actors named above do play themselves in most of their movies. The point is, do you belive them in that role. In the case of Nicolas Cage, I can enjoy watching the same character in different situations. To me that is the mark of a good actor, do you accept that person in situations he is portraying. For example, to me it is the same person in National Treasure, The Rock, Con Air. I can accept him being in those situations. He is not trying to portray a different person in each movie. He has the same facial expressions, reactions to situations in all his movies, yet I enjoy each movie.

I used to think Jim Carrey, but he changed that opinion with 'Eternal Sunshine..' , Edward Furlong SUCKS. I completely agree. Another actor that's always the same is JACK BLACK. makes me want to hurl

Jack Black he's another one, your right always the same. I beleive it is for this reason that King Kong was so awful. Who the hell could take Jack Black seriously?

I used to think that of Brad Pitt.... watch some of his older movies and you can see he plays Brad Pitt...however as he began to grow as an actor you can definitely tell nowadays that he actually does have some depth....
