On-Topic Edward Snowden: NSA Whistleblower Revealed, Interview

The hypocrisy will be shown on Faux news for the next week when they laud him as a hero. If this was under BUsh,they would demand he go to jail.
Well...when conservatives AND liberals become intellectually consistent, it will demand news coverage because all too often it's yay for my team...your side has boogers! One may well be right pointing out the opposing's side's hypocrisy. Yet unless they hold their people to the same standards of accountability, it isn't worth a crap. Obama is Bush with a social conscience, at least the pretense of it. But ultimately morally no superior. And YES( I'm not talking about the Yankees network here... Ninja will get this, lol) when Bush was President I often posted my strong disagreements with his national security policy, including the Orwelllian tinged "Patriot" Act.

the world needs more people like him, to say the government is not more important than its people or more powerful. terror is an excuse to revoke liberty as deficits are an excuse to revoke social contracts.

Snowden is quoted as taking temporary refuge in Hong Kong with the ultimate goal of going to Iceland.

I imagine that the US will bring outrageous pressure to bear to secure his extradition from Hong Kong. It is not helpful to Snowden that Obama just held a cyber security summit with China.

Do any JUBBERS know Hong Kong's stance on extradition? How likely will it be to bend to Chinese pressure to accommodate the US? Do the Brits, who shared this data, have any residual influence? With the cat out of the bag what chance is there that China will seemingly cooperate with the US but actually let him stay in Hong Kong to mine him for information?

Unless Hong Kong is a lock against extradition were I Snowden I would have been already in Iceland when the story broke.

I assume his US passport has been or will be revoked. Can he go anywhere?

From Iceland, Monday, June 10:

Iceland’s Ambassador in China Kristín Árnadóttir explained in an email statement to the South China Morning Post that according to Icelandic law, a person can only submit such an application once he/she is in Iceland.

Icelandic MP for the Pirate Party Birgitta Jónsdóttir, who also chairs the International Modern Media Institute (IMMI), told national broadcaster RÚV that many things concerning Snowden’s case remain unclear.

The IMMI intends to assist Snowden, Birgitta added, however, they must first speak with him. They are currently looking into Snowden’s legal position, including what extradition treaty is in effect between Hong Kong and the U.S.

Re: Edward Snowden: Whistleblower Revealed, Interview

Wow, you would rather a spineless corrupt world to live in? You'd love to report your neighbour for wearing socks with sandals to the fashion police I'd bet.

Oh don't pay him any mind. He's just being jingoistic as usual. The quintessential angry, overly defensive xenophobe. Maybe he's missing the point that the nation that considers itself to be the standard for open and honest democracy apparently is not immune to using the same secretive domestic surveillance practises as second world dictatorships. The whistleblowers do affect us all, all around the world. They demonstrate that it is necessary and possible to sometimes let sunshine in...and they embolden others in countries all around the world to do the same. Even if it is in Germany. Or Canada.

No new info here from what has already been posted...

However I would like to say that what the lady said is bullshit. Bobby Fischer was not just granted asylum, he was granted a citizenship before entering the country. This was in 2005 and we actually had the same parties in power back then (who just returned last month with a new government).

There is no excuse... there is a way as long as there is will.

I'm hoping people will put pressure on this and that something will be done.

Re: Edward Snowden: Whistleblower Revealed, Interview

And, what if it comes out that Americans don't give a shit about what Snowden tried to expose? What, if most Americans, want him arrested?

You say he has a "backbone and decency." I'm pretty sure Americans don't give a shit about what he thought he was exposing. If Americans don't give a shit (and I could be wrong), what did his "backbone and decency" do, then?

And what consequence is this to you? How do these revelations affect you in Germany? Please elaborate. (I'm going to guess that you won't respond to these questions.)

You sounds like you support the government spying on innocent people.

All I was saying is that if Americans don't have any issues with what was uncovered, how heroic was Snowden's betrayal to his country and employer?

Ehhhmmm he was letting the public know something which was being kept away from them.

How the hell is that betrayal?

The US government is betraying it's people and it's important to speak out about it.

It's sad that the nation which the whole world looked up to in the past has sunk so low.

To what extent, if any, is US law being circumvented by resorting to foreign 'third parties' to analyze information on US citizens?
Hopefully, The Guardian is on the case.

On a related note, Daniel Ellsberg makes an important point:

The government claims it has a court warrant under Fisa – but that unconstitutionally sweeping warrant is from a secret court, shielded from effective oversight, almost totally deferential to executive requests. As Russell Tice, a former National Security Agency analyst, put it: "It is a kangaroo court with a rubber stamp."

For the president then to say that there is judicial oversight is nonsense – as is the alleged oversight function of the intelligence committees in Congress. Not for the first time – as with issues of torture, kidnapping, detention, assassination by drones and death squads –they have shown themselves to be thoroughly co-opted by the agencies they supposedly monitor. They are also black holes for information that the public needs to know.

Many Americans do take issue with their government spying on them with, Snowden a United States citizen evidencing his displeasure by exposing the depth and breadth of surveillance of United States citizens by the NSA.

Change.org petition seeking Iceland's accommodation of asylum for Snowden:

An email for your friends:

It looks like I'm unsubscribing from Change.org mailings, right after blocking MoveOn.org (spamming to the Nth degree).

Are there any good liberal, online petition e-mailing lists?

And what are you basing this in bold on, besides feelings?

How have I been betrayed by my government? Please tell me.

I don't give a shit if they track who I'm calling. I'm not doing anything illegal.

Please tell me how my government has betrayed me.

And one word of advice to you: tell your politicians that if you accept Snowden, the US government will try to step on Iceland like a cockroach to get him here.

Exactly the same data that you failed to provide when stating that Americans don't have any issues with what was uncovered (by Snowden)

You've just been telling us that Americans have no issues with what Snowden has exposed thus, why would the US Government want
" to step on Iceland like a cockroach to get him here"?

Are you friggin' serious?

I've never worked for the NSA, but I'm sure they have safeguards in place to prevent these kinds of leaks. What do you think would happen to our intelligence agencies if they don't go after people that leak information?

The responses...my goodness. I'm trying to think of good things about the gay community, but people are making it hard.

You're making claims about the heroism of this guy and I'm saying back it up. I, as an American, don't have to cite shit to say how Americans feel because I am an American. The onus is on you, buddy.

You guys keep saying that these criminals (Assange, Manning and Snowden) are doing us favors. We didn't ask for any favors, dammit. So damn condescending.

@ Lostlover

I support what Snowden has done. If Great Britain's Parliament can debate this type of intelligence gathering so can our Congress. I hold Congress in lesser regard for "palming the ace."

I see no need to resort to jingoisms. They do not advance the discussion.
