Re: Omg Piggies asleep .. so cute :)

Sadly the Egyptians turned the media scare mongering in to an excuse to cull 300,000 pigs belonging to the Christian minority, despite the fact that there wasn't a single case of swine flu in Egypt at the time. Worth remembering here that "normal" flu kills 35,000 a year in the US alone and that Swine flu has killed a handful or less and that in no other country has a cull of pigs been implemented.

It would be nice if people would just pause for a moment and look at how we are being manipulated by the media and those who control it.

If the media shows pics of people in face masks will you believe it will protect you and go out and buy one? The majority probably will despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. Like filtering dirty water through a colander.

It is not too far fetched to think that the whole thing is sponsored by M&M ( main manufacturers of face masks)

I am rather shocked (but not surprized since I have been in Cairo) that they keep those on the roofs of the houses in the middle of the city.

I have trouble finding an overview of the entire situation.

Sorry, no. I disagree. I live in Egypt, and as far as I've seen, this is not the case. Most Egyptians, for one thing, Christian or Muslim, do not eat pork period. Pope Shenouda, the head of the Coptic Church, even made a statement saying that most Copts don't eat pork and Christians should not interpret it as an attack on Egyptian Christians.
Egypt has a lot of problems right now. Unemployment is at a high, and tourism is dropping off, especially with the recent terror attacks in Khan al-Khalili marketplace. The government is simply attempting to avoid a serious outbreak. While it is most likely still a serious over-reaction, people in the west really have no idea what life is like in Egypt and why such a potential problem is so scary.

Some of us do. Egypt's government should never have allowed those pigs to be kept on top of those houses in the first place. Now it's trying to make a right out of two wrongs when it isn't strictly necessary.

You do realize that Europeans are staying away now because of the pig slaughter?

Just by saying this you are demonstrating how little people know about how Egypt works. It doesn't matter if the government forbid people from keeping pigs on roofs or not, no one would follow it unless they felt like it. The vast majority of Egyptians are very poor and can barely read, and will do what they have to survive - and they're very good at figuring out ways to get away with stuff. I see it all the time. And if you get in a tough spot, all you need to do is know how to bribe the police in the right way.
I'm hardly excusing the government...Hosni Mubarak's government is extremely corrupt to say the least, and the vast majority of Egyptians can't wait until he kicks the bucket. But I think they have made much worse mistakes than killing pigs.
I know a few Egyptians here who work in tourism, and the attacks in Khan al-Khalili have been a much bigger drain on profits than the pig scare.

Maybe. But people here are not happy with the pig-slaughter.
