El Cenizo watch thread

I've never hear of El Cenizo, Texas until I saw this thread today.

I've got some issues with the "official language" being Spanish in a town that is covered within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, and the State of Texas, but if it works it works.

As the story pointed out, there are cities within the U.S. that are cracking down on illegals and illegal immigration, and there are those that are lax on it.

El Cenizo appears to pretty easy going on the topic. Why shouldn't they be? Look where they're located!

Once again it illustrates how much the Federal Government has failed the American public on this issue.

It appears that everything is reverting to local control.

If it works, it works.

Looking at a web map the southside of the town goes right to the Rio. I'll bet that road starts up again in mexico.

That's probably why you don't see it on the map!

This story that Anderson Cooper did fails to address one simple aspect of life here in Texas; this is just the way things are. It's been this way dating back to the 1820's. There's nothing new here.

Many Tejanos, and Texicans, and Texans have lived side by side like this for more than 150 years.

The tensions between Texans, Tejanos and Mexicans has been there too.

As a Native Texan I share my state's Heritage with those of Mexican descent. Many of whom can trace their family history here as far back as I can.

I speak "Spanglish" because it's part of my Heritage as a Texan. This isn't Ohio, or some state back east, this is Texas. There's nothing special or out of the ordinary here.

One thing that did impress me however, is that the story points out that most all of the residents speak both Spanish and English. You'd be hard pressed to find that within the Spanish speaking inner-city neighborhoods of Dallas, or Houston. There it's Spanish only. To the extent where many Tejanos can't communicate.

That's the problem with the current "immigration" issue IMO. We're losing our heritage out to a group of immigrants who have no desire to assimilate. They want to wave their Mexican flags, and demand rights that many of us have had to earn through years of history living together.

To declare Santa Anna a hero of the Battle of the Alamo, and to claim Texas as always being a part of Mexico makes this Texans blood boil! :grrr:

I was born and raised in San Antonio as were my Mother and Father. My mothers side we can trace back 150 years and I can only assume there is some latino blood in me. I lived in Houston 20+years and you could hardly find any latinos. I now live in Corpus Christi and it's just like SA only smaller. Little Mexico. I have many latino friends and some family, and it irks me to see the Mexican flag flown as if Texas was nothing. Cinco de mayo and deis y seis are overblown IMO

^Since when did anyone in the US have to "earn" their rights? We have a constitution.

Beyond that, I don't see how any of this matters. Official Languages of any kind are pointless in the US. This is a free country, people can speak any language they want. Second generations almost always speak English and identify as American, regardless of where they come from.

Cinco De Mayo is an interesting holiday, and speaks to the relationship that Mexico and America has shared over the years.

Cinco History

I LOVE my Latino friends! (*8*)

They'll tell you, "Any excuse to have a barbecue and drink beer should be a Texas tradition!" :D

Here in Dallas my neighbors break out the grill, the ice chests, and fireworks everytime the Dallas Cowboys win a game! In addition to Sunday afternoons, birthdays, New Years, the 4th of July, and any time a member of the familia accomplish something. ;)

In the last two post are the words Cowboys and Indians. Is that where we have gone to? A nice long game of cowboys and Indians. I wanna be Tanto who is gonna be Hi HO Silver?

As a fan of early TV, I feel I must correct a few errors here. The Indian's name was Tonto not Tanto, 'Hi Ho Silver ...... Away' was a command used by the Lone Ranger to Silver, his horse, when he wanted to hat-up.

There ...... I feel much better now! ;)

many of you stereotype

all mexicans are ok and funloving and friendly and democrats?think so?

others are criminals and some are conservatives who are also sick of illegal immigration

the wikipedia article says most the Hispanics in el cinizo are the white kind and not the indian kind -sounds weird

theyre invaders and i heard the cops are mean there and tell whites and blacks to leave

I hope you are not including me in that stereotyping. I agree all mexicans are ok and funloving and friendly. But not necessary democrats. Bush spent a lot of time promising them the stars and treating them like the religeomaniacs to get them to vote REP. I don't think Texas would have stayed Republican if they hadn't voted REP. I find more latinos are gay friendly than whites or blacks.

I'm ok with the community to speak spanish only. If the entire town are latino it makes sense. I was raised baptist and 75% of my rural HS were latinos. You might as well say I went to catholic school. the parish cathedral was across the road from the HS and the priest always came to the school to bless whatever we were doing. I took 2 years spanish as required to graduate and more latinos were in class than white. They spoke TexMex where I was raised...|

^ Ummmmm TexMex! :D

i dont think tex mex people are like these new crop of illegal aliens at least 50% or more of illegals can be bad news and or we dont need the low skills especilly when others wait in line to get here

tex mex?usa fought a war with mexico not tex mex people

a lot of mexicans hate americans

id say costa rica panama brazil and aregntina are a lot more friendlier -but im not an expert on the subject because ive only been to Tijuana and yes they did seem friendly there years ago

you like it so much go live there-just remember the tex mex people arent the same as mexico at least i dont think so -some are

Well, IMO, you're only exhibiting the same attitude that many "whites" or "gringo" had toward "wetbacks" a few years ago.

This entire immigration debate has singled out Hispanics as a whole, and not specifically the "illegals."

It's drudged up deep seated prejudices and hatred from both sides of the debate.

I've got American friends of mine who have Hispanic Surnames, and who have "brown" skin who can't speak one lick of Spanish, who've lived here all of their lives, who are just as proud of their Texas heritage, and American lineage as anyone else that I know, but they're now looked at differently by certain members within "White" society because of their ancestory.

For your information Tex-Mex describes a type of FOOD, and not a group of people. ](*,)

I studied Texas History in public schools, as did many of my fellow Mexican-American friends. Until recently it was a requirement to be able to graduate from High School. We know who utlimately won that war, and we share the same indignation against the Mexico was here first crowd.

This picture can't be painted with such a broad "you like it so much go live there" crowd.

They're already here!

I have no idea who you are talking about being ignorant.
TexMex is how they speak spanish. They will talk in spanish and throw an english word in here and there. Also what TexMex food is called as Centex stated. It is not the same food as served in Mexico. It's like the Italian pizza, it's not Italian.

I just looked at your link, and that's absurd. This is Texas we are talking about not California. Texas won independence from Mexico at the Battle of the Alamo and defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The US had nothing to do with it. After we became a Republic we did the US a favor by joining with them. When we seceded from the US for the Civil War and rejoined with the stipulation that we can secede again if we want to. No other state can make that claim. Also the Texas flag is flown at the same height as the US flag. Texas flag and the US flag are equal. No other state can say that. Texas was the only state that was a Republic recognized by the US. I believe we still have a Texas embassy in NYC. And if we want we can spllit into 5 different states and have 10 senators in DC.
I don't know who these people are in California, that's their problem, and you need to go to more places than Tiajuana.

texas by james michner seemed like an interesting book

James Michener It was a fucking NOVEL, VERY LOOSELY based upon Texas History.

Reading James A. Michener's novel TEXAS for Texas History would be like reading a "romance novel" for Divorce Counseling.

Which is why American "Pop-Culture" and people getting their HISTORY from sources "based upon" really annoy the SHIT OUT OF ME! :grrr:

fuckbait is right!

Texas isn't California, and anyone who thinks that there is a comparison not only offend the peopleS of Texas, it offends the people's of California.

It also shows how ignorant someone is regarding AMERICAN HISTORY!

:grrr:

Do you want to know a fact that was pointed out to me by a fellow JUBber and friend during my most recent visit to San Antonio, just outside of the Alamo?

Only TWO hispanics are recognized on the bronze plaque as having defended the Alamo.

Would you not agree that this oversight is BULLSHIT?

Why would Juan Sequin be so interested in returning to the Alamo if not for the "promise" that he made to his MEN (plural not singular) MEN who were the (what we now call Hispanic) defenders of the Alamo?

Mexicans and Texans are like peas and carrots! Our heritage goes together, and many of us will be GOD-DAMNED before we let some partisan party politics dictate to us what this fucking debate is all about!

We no probably BETTER than any AMERICANS what's happening here.

For Anderson Cooper to present El Cenizo as some anomaly, is disingenuous to an extreme, and only foments more hatred and misunderstand than providing any real solutions toward "Immigration Reform." Which our politicians in Washington have demonstrated that they have neither the stomach for, or the will to do anything about it!

*end rant*

Very nice rant. Agreed on AC360, I saw that piece and thought "lets stir the shit some more and maybe we can get some violence stories" complete shit

I never really thought of the heritage thing the way you put it and it makes sense.

Finally, never in all my days would I have dreamt of the words "FUCKBAIT IS RIGHT" being sensical and sincere.

G'night

its funny how there are so many types of "hispanics"

blacks, american indians,cubans

that blond kid simon on show 7th heaven tv show is half cuban

is hispanic some phoeny label or something?

http://images.google.com/images?um=...=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=David Gallagher

so whats an anglo? someone who speaks english as a first language?

nixon created all this crap

I honestly don't know where you're from, or what your politics behind this are, but you seriously come across as someone who doesn't understand the contributions that Hispanics have made to North America.

I get the impression that you expect all of the "wetbacks" to be Mestizo, and because of that don't belong anywhere.

Why don't you just come out with it? Whatever it is that you're trying to say here.
