I hope everyone is having a happy 16 September - mine was not so lucky. I tried to visit a client whose office is on Lafayette Park, about two blocks from MacArthur Park and close to Koreatown, and I could not get within a mile of there because of streets being blocked off. Not only was it Mexican Independence Day, it was also Hangawee (Korean) Festival day in Seoul International Park, also near my client's office - in fact it is on the way, which is why the streets were blocked off so far away.

I didn't go to any festival this week-end, but I did manage to make it up to Sunset Blvd, where I met my client (and friend, BTW) for lunch. Afterwards, I did some computer work at his assistant's apartment, which was far enough away from MacArthur Park that I was able to get through. Traffic through that neighborhood was a horrible nightmare, but I did survive. Near my house, however, there was some sort of bike convention or marathon, and there were thousands of bikes on Main Street in Santa Monica that I saw on my way to the freeway. I left early enough that that was not a problem and knew how to avoid it on the way back home. And I thought the summer traffic problems were over!

Anyone else celebrate 16 September? It's one of the biggest holidays in L.A., although the Central Americans ignore it.

"My friends and countrymen: neither the king nor tributes exist for us any longer. We have borne this shameful tax, which only suits slaves, for three centuries as a sign of tyranny and servitude; a terrible stain which we shall know how to wash away with our efforts. The moment of our freedom has arrived, the hour of our liberty has struck; and if you recognized its great value, you will help me defend it from the ambitious grasp of the tyrants. Only a few hours remain before you see me at the head of the men who take pride in being free. I invite you to fulfill this obligation. And so without a patria nor liberty we shall always be at a great distance from true happiness. It has been imperative to take this step as now you know, and to begin this has been necessary. The cause is holy and God will protect it. The arrangements are hastily being made and for that reason I will not have the satisfaction of talking to you any longer. Long live, then, the Virgin of Guadalupe! Long live America for which we are going to fight!"

Ayer, estaba el Dia de los Centroamericanos. 15/09/1821 was when the Central American Federation declared its independence from Spain. Over the next 20 years or so Central America broke up into its constituent parts, or more precisely, into Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The other two central american republics came later. [Trying to remember: Is Belize a republic?? Or is QEz II queen there still?]

Sometimes they get confused and marry each other, but otherwise Mexicanos and Centroamericanos don't party together. Shame, shame.
:D
But viva a los mexicanos!!!!
Y a los centroamericanos, tambien, un poco tardiamente.
