Electric cars have a PR problem with normal everyday people

Lol. People on here using “people I know” doesn’t really mean anything outside of showing that your perspective of the World is very small if you think these people are any indication of how the general populace works.

Ok, how about this. Do you deny that pickup trucks are very popular in the US? Do you deny that these pickup trucks like the f150 and the silverado cost more than 39k?

Not all pick up trucks cost that much and not everyone with one has that model. So I don’t see the point you are trying to make.

/\ Another consideration is that there are often capital gains tax incentives for businesses that buy new vehicles.

@ Not Hard Up. I remember when my partner and I were driving around rural, small-town Georgia and South Carolina a few years ago, we were astounded (because we had never thought about it previously) to see billboards advertising companies that provide cash for loans taken out on cars that people already owned, not loans to buy cars.

It's just the most recent version of loan sharking.

When poor people are either wanting something they cannot afford, or have a financial crisis, the loan sharks are there with their payday lending or car title loans.

States that have any same regulations won't allow them, but states that can be bought encourage them. New Mexico is such a state, and the loan sharks have bought the legislature. There is a loan shark in every strip mall in Albuquerque. Shameless profiteering.

Or, they could indeed represent the larger population. It's not too hard to get statistics to see if your perception is accurate to the larger population, and then to regions or urban/rural, etc.

And, anyone driving in a city can tell the average age of the cars and trucks on the road, and similar observable indicators. This isn't like opining about one's neighbors' marriages or parenting.

/\@anyone driving in a city

No. I wholeheartedly disagree.

I don't believe that most people are that observant/perceptive. I believe that most people see shiny and think 'new'.

@ observable indicators

I doubt that most people ever considered the day of the week, or the time of day, that they are seeing vehicles and traffic.

That is not the point is it? The point is you never look at an f150 driver and say out loud "that person must be rich" or "that person must be wealthy". Why in the world would you assume a truck that costs half that is only good as a rich mans toy just because it has the word tesla attached to it?

Anyone with a semi decent middle class income can get a tesla. It is nothing special and nothing really to brag about.

@ toy

You are talking about an experimental vehicle.

Not many are able or willing to dish out cash on such a trial. Not many are excited to be lab rats. :) Not even for any sort of (imaginary?) Prestige.

BTW;. Does anyone else remember seeing pictures of coffee shops with extension cords going in all directions for people to charge their electronic gadgets when places such as parts of the NYC area were without power for weeks? :)

Again, that simply not the topic of the thread. At no point did I say to anyone to go get a tesla car. The point of the thread is it is simply not any kind of status symbol because anyone with a middle class income can get one. My cybertruck will have cost me half what other people pay for their f150 and Silverado.

As a matter of fact, every time anyone asks me if they should get a tesla, I tell them absolutely not.

So, I don't know why people on here keep assuming I'm trying to get people to get a tesla even though I'm doing the opposite. I absolutely discourage people from getting one.

Does anyone else remember pictures of long lines at the gas station back during the shortage?

Unless you ride a horse, you will be affected by any sort of energy shortage.

Your thread title says "PR problem".

And in your opening post you claim; "they cost just as much as any other car"

Stop lying.

If it is nothing to brag about then why do you continually do it? I didn’t say buying ONE truck makes one wealthy or rich. I said pretending that 39k is “only 39k” is not accurate when it comes to most Americans.

My auto club will fetch petrol anytime anywhere.

I don't recall reading anything about charging up an electric car. I wonder if they even have the resources.

From 2016 to 2019 "BMW's ReachNow" was available in Seattle and Portland.

ReachNow made BMW electric cars available as a pay-per-ride service, available with or without a driver. Anyone could register online and pick among various subscription levels. Once confirmed, the subscriber could call for a ride and pay either per ride, per day, per week or monthly.

BMW's ReachNow subscription service made car ownership unnecessary and the electric car fleet remained the property of BMW.

While the service was abruptly cancelled in 2019, ReachNow remains the goal of BMW as the corporation sees the end of car buying in the future as incomes continue to lag behind the cost of living.

I lived in Florida in 1974. I remember it well, I didn't sit in many lines as I siphoned gas from my van to run my Yamaha 80.

I bought the model X a year ago and absolutely love it. My only complaint is the range is around 210 miles but mine is a 2016 and newer ones do go farther.

As for battery life Elon is concerned about that as well and that is why he is very careful with the range. All his cars can go way farther but he doesn't want battery degeneration. They have tested some Tesla's and abuse the batteries with overcharging them and one of them had over 400k miles with little maintenance. He is also trying to make them affordable for everyone.

Living in an apartment can be more difficult to charge but there is superchargers everywhere and depending on where you live it really is cheap to get a full charge which usually costs me between 6-12 bucks. At home I charge late hours and figured a full charge from completely empty would cost around 6-7 bucks. Electric cars are really the future. They are becoming cheaper to own, faster to charge and less expensive.

The government's job is to push everyone using it.
Otherwise the future is too far away to buy electric car. Especially in Australia.
