I never knew that!

We never got any of the American soaps ever shown in the U.K. - just our own, and the Australian ones.

I remember once seeing a very brief outtake from this on another show when I was much younger, but I never knew it was from a soap, and I also mistook her for Ava Gardner. !oops!

According to Wikipedia....

Arriving on the canvas on November 10, 1981, Mrs. Mikkos Cassadine sends her Emissary to all the prominent citizens of PC with invitations to attend a reception she is giving.

Luke and Laura's November 16, 1981 wedding, featuring Taylor's Helena, was watched by 30 million viewers and remains the highest-rated hour in American soap opera history.

Taylor's last appearance as Helena aired on November 19, 1981.

P.S. I MUST quote this from later on in the article....

In Summer 1981, Luke, Laura, and Robert Scorpio foil Mikkos Cassadine's plot to freeze the world using a weather machine

:rotflmao:

WTF????

British soaps were never as crazy and intriguing as all of this! Wish we had got this show back then!

My Mom watched General Hospital back then and I remember her telling me about Elizabeth Taylor appearing on the show.

She was one classy lady.

Yes, a lot of grand stars from the 40's and 50's started appearing on garbage soaps in the 80's. As their popularity faded and the roles offered became few and far between, we saw the likes of Charlton Heston, Barbara Stanwyck, Ava Gardner, Jane Wyman, Anne Baxter, Kim Novak, Howard Keel, Lana Turner, etc to name a few, showing up on prime-time soaps in the 80's...

It was a little stunning to me to discover Liz signing up for a DAYTIME soap, which was one notch below the quality of PRIMETIME soaps. But her film career by that point had also petered out. The 80's didn't have much to offer her, not after starring in forgettable pap of the late 70's as part of an ensemble cast like The Blue Bird or The Mirror Crack'd. Her days of headlining feature films were OVER!

I'm surprised she didn't try to land herself her own TV show during the 80's. I'm guessing her issues with pills and alcoholism and health probably kept her from making any long-term commitments.

General Hospital is good, but OLTL was way better :( so sad they canceled my soap...

(I'm jealous! Her jowls are looking better than mine. I guess some tell-all bio will eventually tell us the facts about her face surgery.)

We never got any of the American soaps ever shown in the U.K.

This is, generally speaking, A Good Thing.

I should rephrase - we never got any of the American DAYTIME soaps ever shown in the U.K. ;)

But we certainly got the rest - Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, etc. - and I watched the first two, but not the other two.

I read that she had a "relationship" with the blond guy with the perm. Don't know if that's true or not, 'cause I've also seen claims that he's gay.

Elizabeth told Jane Pauley in an interview in the late 1980's that she didn't have a facelift after losing weight but did have a chin tuck.
