Does anyone know how email forwards came into being? Those lovely emails that have a sweet poem (that you couldn't care less about), a story about a cat/dog/woman/man/child/alien (that you couldn't care less about), a patriotic message (that you couldn't care less about), a political message (that you couldn't care less about), an off color racial/sexual/gender joke (that you couldn't care less about), or a religious message (that you couldn't care less about). I'm curious, what and who gave birth to these things? Who decided to create a bunch of inane emails and forward them to their hundred closest friends?

For the most part, I do pretty well at stopping email forwards; but, inevitably, one slips through the cracks from time to time. I don't think my "friends" even think about who's on the receiving end of the forward. I'm a Democrat, so I'm not interested in the latest, "Obama is the Anti-Christ" forward. I'm a woman, so the off color joke, "smack that bitch when she won't suck your dick," isn't going to make me laugh. I'm Catholic, so the top "100 reasons that prove the Pope was sent by Satan," isn't going to make me shout Amen.

Even better when the culprit CCs everyone instead of using the BCC function and your email is floating around to a bunch of strangers who seem to think you enjoy reading drivel, so they add you to their forward list.

Does anyone enjoy these things? Oh, and can I get your email address? I'll forward it on to the "friends" who insist on sharing that must read story about the little puppy that finally found a home.

I don't get any e-mail forwards.
But that's probably because I have scolded about anyone who sent me those :)
And if I see my address in one of those mails where no BCC is used, and then some idiot presses reply all .. THEN you have me really angry.

I think the internet has become a proverbial backyard fence and everyone you know are standing on the other side of it.

i don't send those bulk emails or forward them.
Its not personal, like junk mails really. !!!

oh i don't use "CCs , BCC functions "

what are CCs and BCC stands for anyway ? !oops! (so dumb)

How did they get started oh wise one? Come on Corndog, educate this non-techie.

I have a crazy theory that the person who invited the email forward is the same exact person who invented meth. Sure, that sounds like an off the wall theory, but just think about it.

It's too easy to hit the reply to all button without thinking. My sis used to do it, now I don't get so many bcoz I told her off :grrr: Occaisionally, they are interesting. Otherwise the delete button comes in handy.

Your sis did it because she thought its important and might help you with those "wise emails".

No tech-story here. Initially it was just for .. forwarding a mail. Like it happens in a company a thousand times. Request for whatever? Forward it to the Person in charge of that area. Done.

Forwarding every shit to everyone is a social phenomenon. Right there with myspace self-whoring and the other attention seeking stuff the web is made of.

carbon copy and blind carbon copy

It pisses me off when someone sends off a mail with all the addresses in the CC field.

I don't want strangers to know my mail address to send me spam :grrr:

Oh, these forwards are also finding their way into text messaging. Just last week I received a text rose to let me know I'm loved, and of course, I was supposed to forward that rose to 10 of my bffs to let them know they're loved too.

Doesn't that cost you money?

I have unlimited text messaging so no, but if I didn't it would. I'm sure these forward culprits don't think about that before hitting send.

Someone must enjoy forwards or they wouldn't be so prevalent. Come on; fess up. Who's into them?

ugh. gl doth detest forwarded e-mail drivel.
