Year after year, even with the voting format changes, they keep nominating 'Boston Legal' and 'Two and a Half Men'. I don't get it.

Watch that Ryan Seacrest nomination go straight to his head. Hooray for Amy Poehler's groundbreaking nomination.

It's too bad that Amy Poehler is leaving SNL before the new season starts. She's the best one on the show right now. I'll miss her. I'm glad she got the nomination.

Oh, and Kathy Griffin was nominated again for My Life On The D-List. Watch out, Jesus.

My picks:

Best Series, Drama:

Mad Men. I was surprised; this is a good one.

Best Series, Comedy:

30 Rock. May it win a thousand more.

Best Actor, Drama:

Hugh Laurie - House. I don't watch a couple of these shows. He's my favorite though.

Best Actor, Comedy:

Objectively: Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
What I Hope For: Lee Pace - Pushing Daisies

Best Actress, Drama:

Sally Field - Brothers + Sisters. When in doubt, Emmy voters, vote for Sally.

Best Actress, Comedy:

Tina Fey - 30 Rock. Oh I love her. Oh I love her so hard.

Best Supporting Actor, Drama Series:

William Shatner - Boston Legal (Not overly fond of the show but the dude is funny. I know he's just playing himself, basically, but still.)

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy Series:

Neil Patrick Harris - How I Met Your Mother. There are no other nominees. None.

Best Supporting Actress, Drama Series:

I either don't watch or don't like the nominees here. Guess I'll go with Candice Bergan- Boston Legal.

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy Series:

Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies. FUCK YEAH.
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live. Oh wait. DAMMIT.
Holland Taylor, Two And A Half Men. And another one who is a funny funny lady on a pretty dull show.
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty. I'm Wilhelmina Slater; I don't get wet.

Outstanding Reality Competition Program:

The only reality competition show I watch is Last Comic Standing. Can't say.

Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality Competition Program:

Never seen any of these either. Not gonna weigh in where I know nothing.

I know season two wan't as good as season one, but Dexter and Michael C. Hall FTMFW. I can't believe neither where nominated for season 1, the season 1 finale may be the best hour of I've seen in my entire life.

Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality Competition Program:

seriously? Thats not a real category right?

But i guess if you have Outstanding Game Show Host why not, but its still laughable to me.

Emmy is supposed to be something pretugious and people work so hard and they just give one to a host of a reality show?

I dont understand the guest Emmy either. The regular actors work their ass off all season and a celebrity just does 2 shows and gets an Emmy lol.

Also SNL is NOT a comedy series so...clearly there is some bias going on there, and i bet she is going to win.

Anyways this season i only care about DAMAGES

Love Sally Field as Nora and B&S is one of my must see TVs but she won last year and in any event noone can compete with Geln Close this season on DAMAGES.

Not to mention she got robbed for her fine work on The Shield.

DAMAGES should win Drama series no if ands or buts about it.

I really want Sandra Oh to win this year, i felt she was robbed last year but i found out that she wasnt technically robbed due to submitting the wrong episode.

Had she submitted the wedding dress breakdown scene she would have one.

Why is Boston Legal in the drama category? while The Wire gets shut out again?

The comedy category needs to be split into Dramedy and Traditonal sitcom with a laugh track.

It is not fair for regular comedies to have to compete with dramedies.

Drama trumps comedy most of the time.

I'm more than a little disappointed that 'Desperate Housewives' got absolutely no recognition for an excellent season. Especially Dana Delaney.

But nevertheless, here are my picks:

Best Series, Drama:
Damages

Best Series, Comedy:
30 Rock

Best Actor, Drama:
don't care

Best Actor, Comedy:
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock

Best Actress, Drama:
Glenn Close - Damages

Best Actress, Comedy:
Tina Fey - 30 Rock

Best Supporting Actor, Drama Series:
Ted Danson - Damages

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy Series:
Rainn Wilson - The Office

Best Supporting Actress, Drama Series:
don't care

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy Series:
Jean Smart, Samantha Who?

Some other nominees. Stuff like guest stars, miniseries, writing, that stuff. *s are my favs. Spellbound, note Desperate Houswives has two noms for guest actresses. I didnt' see this season (or any of them since the first), so I can't speak as to whether or not it's been robbed.

Only 2 nominations for Brothers and Sisters?!? I don't get it.

Give it time. Betty should have a good, long run. She really did deserve at least a nomination for the beginning of this season though. The whole Santos thing, especially the episode where she finally comes to terms, was really great work by her.

WHEN will they ever acknowledge the spectacular work done by Ana Ortiz as Hilda on "Ugly Betty?" And that of Judith Light on the same show? Sure Vanessa Williams is good, but really a lot of good actresses could have done her role just as good or better. The real find of the show is Ana Ortiz, in my opinion.

I totally agree. Ana Ortiz is my favorite on that show.

I know the Amazing Race always wins, but...Survivor had it's best season (Micronesia) since probably Season 1, and it doesn't even get nominated? So sad.

I wouldn't be surprised. The Emmy's are alot about buzz and not alot about quality.

That's how quality shows like BSG (Battle Star Galacticca) get snubbed.

And I know people will think I'm crazy and I admit I'm clearly biased but I think Jensen and Jared do a damn fine job acting and they've got not a chance in hell of ever getting a nod because they're young and pretty.

...wait, the dudes from Supernatural? Neither one is remarkably bad, but they're also not really award caliber. That'd be like nominating Tom Welling for Smallville. He's not bad, but...no. It has nothing to do with young and pretty or (again) with them even being bad, so much as other people are doing better jobs on other shows.

I agree 100% on Battlestar though. SciFi channel always gets snubbed, purely because their usual original fare is absolute shit. But Battlestar's a DAMN good show, and Tricia Helfer, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Edward James Olmos, and James Callis should all at least have Emmy noms by now. Now those are underrated performers. I'm also upset Tin Man got ignored for best actor in a miniseries (Neal McDonough) and best featured actor and actress in a miniseries (Alan Cumming and Kathleen Robertson, respectively).

I agree that they're good (Jesen is a much better actor than Jared btw) but there are only 5 nominees for Best Actor in a Drama -- and as much as I like them -- there are probably 20 actors more deserving than those two cuties. Supernatural gets the nominations it does deserve -- in tech categories like cinematography (where the show really shines).

You're half right about the Emmys. Buzz does play a factor, but not the only factor. The Emmys are actually the only major award show that tries to actually make the voters watch what they're voting on (unlike the Oscars, Tonys and Grammys which are ALL about buzz). The Emmy voting rules have been tweaked in recent years trying to find the best fit. The current rules are: a top 10 list of shows and performers is determined in each category via a popular vote. Then each show/ performer who lands on the list must submit an episode of their best work. Voting panels convene for scheduled screenings of these episodes and must rank them IMMEDIATELY after the screening (without talking to each other, so popularity and buzz influence is minimized). The show and performer with the most number 1 votes receives a nomination and so on and so forth. This process of screening the episodes is repeated later -- after the nominations -- in order to determine the winner.

This year critical buzz did land Battlestar Galactica in the top 10 list for Best Drama and Lead Actress in a Drama. (The top 10 lists for major categories were released this year by the Television Academy. You can find the lists easily online) Based on whatever episode they submitted, that determined whether they received a nomination or not. But they did get pretty far, in terms of the preliminaries, so we can't really blame the Emmys -- or "buzz" -- for their non-inclusion. If anything, it was positive critical buzz that got them on the top 10 list to begin with. The tastes of Emmy judges (grandstanding acting/choosing winners with their hearts over their heads) are sometimes questionable, but the Emmys deserve a lot of credit for at least trying to make their process fair (unlike the other major award shows). Sometimes the shows themselves fuck it up with the episode submission. Two years ago, Lost -- still one of the best shows on TV -- after winning best drama the previous year, was left out of a Drama Series nomination in its second year, because they submitted an episode with dangling plotlines that went nowhere, that only loyal viewers of the show would be able to follow. This year they submiited an episode that also works as a stand alone episode (the brilliant, emotionally satisfying "The Constant") and once again received a Drama Series nomination.

I have no idea what Battlestar's episode submission was and how strong it was, but you can find the answer to that question (if you're curious) by perusing goldderby.com at the LA Times website "The Envelope." Tom O'Neil is an obnoxious award show whore, but he knows what he's talking about in terms of the voting process. He has also shown over the years how -- generally -- the strongest episode eubmissions tend to win Emmys, so the screening process is working. It's really up to the shows and the performers to submit their best work and sometimes they don't. And sometimes, even if they do, an underdog with no buzz might have had a stronger submission and end up winning (Allison Janney winning Lead Actress in West Wing's third year over the more hyped Jennifer Garner in Alias' first year or the Six Feet Under women/Edie Falco winning in The Sopranos' third season over Lorraine Bracco's rape episode/Sela Ward winning over both Sopranos women -- who had more buzz -- for her beautiful pilot episode of Once and Again/The Practice winning Best Drama in its first season despite abysmal ratings. In all of these examples, the episodes submitted by the eventual winners were very strong) -- and these wins often puzzle TV critics and viewers, but ultimately, they remain true to a meritocracy.

I feel like suchn a tool for knowing all of this. LOL.

lol... don't feel like a tool. I check gold derby daily and know all these useless facts as well. :D

But the trend is, if you're under 30, good luck getting a nod. I don't remember the last person to be nominated that young prior to Frankie Muniz. If Elizabeth Ross can't get nominated for 'Mad Men'... a show oozing with Emmy love, it really doesn't speak well for other younger actors.

Anyway, am just glad to see 'Flight of the Conchords' get 4 nods this year.

One minor middling detail: The Tonys REQUIRES its voters to see every show nominated, at least for the major awards (best play/musical, all eight acting awards, book, score, revival/musical revival, direction). It's not a very large pool, as opposed to the Oscars or Grammys, so they can pull something like that. So "all about buzz" really doesn't apply there. It plays about as big a role as buzz does in the Emmys, I'd wager.

lol well I agree my Jensey can out act Jared but like I said I'm biased. I mean I'm not stupid. I know he's not exactly James Dean but it's just like to me he has a MUCH harder job than a number of people who just get buzzed about because they're in high profile shows. I mean doing sci-fi is always hard and quite frankly my boy pulls it off without a hitch. Even if he doesn't make the shortlist a long list mention would be nice especially when there are people like Patrick freakin Dempsey on there. I mean come on... My little brother who I've obsessively protected for years is destined to lead the armies of hell and my father sold his soul to the devil to save my life and at the same time saddled me with the responsibility of killing said little brother if need be vs. I want to break up with Meredith, and then make out with a nurse, and then get back with Meredith, and then break up with Meredith and continue the cylce forever with no clear motivation other than we're hte main couple so we can't be together or the series would end.

Who really has the harder job there?

And I'd have to say if I needed to choose their strongest field I wouldn't say cinematography but writing.

But yeah I know they're not some powerhouse but the way Emmy mistreated Buffy and company just speaks to their overriding inability to recognize quality TV.

Buffy is a better example. Totally agree with you there. Criminally overlooked series.

Supernatural is a well made show but no way in hell is it one of the 5 best written shows on television. Not even close.

It's massively underappreciated in general. People really don't realize the depth of the characters. The writers know how to create strong character wiht uathentic emotional connections and be fun and campy when need be (I refer you to A Very Supernatural Christmas) :P I could see where people wouldn't appreciate it but I think it does a damn good job at making sure the boys fight not just literal demons but figurative ones as well in a way that keeps the show light and fun while creating an emotional attachment and keeping tension and interest at a peak.

It's like A Long Day's Journey Into Night but with monsters instead of TB lol

I agree, it's a wonderful show, and better than people think...but there are still more deserving series if we're talking about the very best of the year. Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, Lost, Friday Night Lights, and Mad Men all feature superior writing, directing, and acting. These should have been the five nominees for Best Drama Series.

The only thing I can quibble there is the massively overhyped and poorly poorly written Lost which cares only about shock value and not at all about character development or plot continuity.
