Emoticons, what's your opinion on them?

What do you think of emoticons?

I'm not a big emoticon fan. I can usually understand the 'tone' of what someone's typing just by the context. Although it doesn't really bother me if people use one every once in awhile.

What does annoy me a little is when people use them to an extreme degree. I'm talking plastering their posts with emoticons every couple sentences, or putting multiple emoticons in a row. It kind of distracts from the words in my opinion. Even worse to me is when people use emoticons as substitutes for punctuation.

What do you guys think?

Li'l Bit only uses them when he's feeling particularly strong emotion.

Like now. :~|

(Extreme indifference FTW!) :~D

i once was chatting with a guy who turned out to be quite the racist. he put a ":)" behind every sentence, while he was making increasingly appaling statements about how some cultures are superior to others, and i wouldnt understand because im not german. first, i thought he was being ironic, because his logic was just so hilariously stupid, and besides, smilies! then it started to dawn on me that he was dead-serious about it. of course i told him to go fuck himself.

he was generally a very confused person, so i guess emoticons are the least of his problems, but still... its the only time i remeber being seriously confused and annoyed by them.

I was first made aware of them in the days of IRC (or maybe e-mail before that, but it wasn't commonplace).

I think people have adapted their communication style over the last ten years to better suit the written live exchange of ideas. At the time though, it conveyed enough context that it seemed to improve conversations.

Of course that is when it was actually a chain of punctuation, instead of punctuation replaced automatically by the system with some sort of maudlin cartoon face.

Actually, I've never noticed this until now, but it looks like I can turn them off. Hmmmm...

I love emoticons! :D

They're just a pain to use on the iPad. :(

I love Mr. Winky: ;)

Love them ..| They add a dimention of "color" to the text :=D: They also add an extra puch of humor  Some of these here at JUB are hilarious like: :rotflmao: :hurray::jasun:\:/:goodevil: :bartshock Can't believe some people can't stand emoticons at all :grrr:](*,) If a hot guy like you who's not into emoticons, I'll be happy to get rid of them in my life for you to sleep with me.

I don't use them in the corporate/business world though [-X

They are very useful. The written word doesn't always lend itself to what we might express verbally. For example, sarcasm doesn't work well in writing.

If you were a genius, like me, you'd know that.

I think they are seriously overused. Especially by younger people. Frig I feel old when I say that. I'm only 26! But it's true, my lil Sis and her friends use emoticons to ask and answer each others' questions. I think emoticons, texting, and the net actually inhibit people's ability to communicate in person.

When my Sis throws a party it's weird because a few of the kids are talking to each other while th majority of the room are all fixated on cell phones- texting other people in the same room!!! What the hell is up with teenagers? When I went to parties, we interacted!!! I'd glad I'm not still 19.

Well, that was an old man rant.

^ I have a teenage nephew who is like that as well. He just got a cell phone for his summer birthday. Can't stop texting or instant messaging or facebooking with netlingos. Drives me insane sometimes. He's a very outgoing social person...has lots of friends. He's a straight A student also. So I'm not worried about him not be able to communicate verbally.

A cell phone to a teenager is a play toy. To us adults, a phone is a functional communication tool to perform tasks.

My sister is an IB student too. She's a bright kid as are her friends. But they don't interact normally. It's bizarre. It's a party! Make out with someone, dance, do something! Put down the cell phones!

^ Easy tiger. I hear ya. Let it out...let it all out here on JUB...before you hurt someone. lol

I love them :D, but I don't always use them on every post, especially when I'm serious about the topic.

Btw, Chaz should be talking any posts by now.

And no rules about emoticon obligations in this thread!? Blasphemy!  :p

I think the greatest emoticon of all time is actually Freefall's avatar picture!! I laugh everytime I see it.

I like them :P

My only problem is when you have posts that have more than 5 that have them replacing words.

Example: I was feeling like .

I have no idea why that annoys me. I guess I'm just used to using emoticons for the emotion I feel rather than replacing words in sentences.
