equality - fairness

Just like it didn't happen over night in countries that do have gay marriage, and the like. Sadly it takes time. And we in the US are not alone in this fight.

Actually it did practically happen "over night" in Spain. The war in Iraq was going badly, the train bombings...a sudden and unexpected change in government and out of the blue (practically) same-sex marriage. Gay Spaniards were shocked it happened so fast, as the straight ones were. We are talking about months here, not years.

Changes in smoking laws in Spain likewise came "over night" and out of the clear blue sky.

Just a little factoid.

... how big a nuisance is it to fill out two forms instead of one? I don't think it ranks very high.

Personally I don't particularly care about the additional paperwork, there are MUCH bigger problems...

If a gay married couple from Canada (for example) were in the US and one of them is injured or has a health emergency (Stroke, heart attack...) the partner has no (as in ZERO) legal standing to make decisions about his partner's care. He can't sign consent forms or approve of or chose what type of medical intervention should be administered. If, in the event, the partner dies (God forbid) the same-sex partner has no right to even fly the body home for burial or make funeral arrangements.

Look, like I said, I'm a big fan of the US. I'm not trying to 'beat up' on Americans. You should just be aware that there are serious legal issues for gay couples travelling the US. The EU has even issued 'travel advisories' to gay people going to the US to warn them not to assume they have any rights as a spouse. A tiny bit of research will reveal a litany of horror stories.
