From the terms of service: you won't....
a. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
I wouldn't want to be a mod (I have enough complicated responsibilities as it is, thank you!). What they have to do is clearly difficult. I know I don't yet understand how they operate as a group, but I do know there is some intensive cyber-discussion about "issues."
Personally, I know my "cranky" side shows here on JUB from time to time, but I find that if I feel a strong need to tell someone I think they're very wrong, or just disagree strongly, I find that I can usually do that, sometimes very forcefully, without falling into "personal attack."
There are some forums and some threads in which the mods "really shine" -- and I've said as much in those spots when I see it happening!
At other times, I've been kind of underwhelmed. For instance, sometimes seeing what appear to me to be quite egregious violations of the "abusive, harassing, tortious, [hey does this word refer to "torts" or is it supposed to be "torturous"?] defamatory, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable" clause that are allowed to stand when I think they really really shouldn't be. I have seen cases where mods say "we had to edit your comment because it quoted another comment that violates TOS and we edited the original comments too" and the original comments, in fact, stay in the thread for weeks and months. There are times when the advice "you should just put this guy on ignore" doesn't really seem to go nearly far enough.
...the mods for whom I have some sense of who they are, seem to me to be (remarkable) regular folks who have accepted a community service responsibility. But like doctors, judges, psychotherapists, teachers and professors, police, pastors/priests/rabbis, they are just folks, and I know I make mistakes... I figure the mods will, too.
