Ethical dilemma, part 1

Do you switch the train to track B?

  • Yes, I switch it to track B and kill the worker there.

    Votes: 8 80.0%
  • No, I leave it on track A and kill the 6 workers there.

    Votes: 2 20.0%

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
Who knows in reality (actually I do) but that is not a part of this

theoretical inquiry.

To leave things as they are may torture your soul but fate/karma has

spoken. To alter the outcome makes you in essence a MURDERER in all

nuance and definitions of the word. JMHO in theory.

This ethical dilemma seems specifically designed to direct the answer to the one painfully obvious choice - kill the one to save the six.

As the original poster has not so subtly pointed out, there will be a part 2 to this little riddle, which I am willing to bet will go something like this:

Part 2 - same scenario, but the guy on track B just happens to be the guy that will eventually find a cure for cancer, solve world hunger, bring peace to the middle east, dismantle the Westboro Baptist Church, direct a film that will make more money than Avatar, and prevent Brittany Spears from ever being shown in public again.

Or he's a guy whose connection to the Mafia will ensure that you and your entire family to the tenth cousins will be wiped out if you kill him. That's a risk you always take in this kind of situation, inherent in this scenario.

Seriously, here's my question: why are you trying to fuck up my experiment? I've made it very clear that telling what the second part is will mess up this part. Why are you trying to mess me up? Have I made myself your enemy in some way?

By the way, that's trying - not succeeding. The above may or may not be what I'm doing, but frankly it's a little trivial compared to what I'm trying to do here.

Personally, as I entertained Criostoir's Dilemma I anticipated different subsequent scenarios, but I kept them to myself.

I'm interested in others' genuine responses.

I appreciate your keeping them to yourself. I'm glad to see that good sense is not completely dead on this site.

There seems to be a lot of weighing of human life on these message boards lately.

I am not trying to "fuck up your experiment". It is obvious you are attempting to make some sort of point with your scenario, which I am sure you are eagerly awaiting to discuss, so lets discuss it. I know I can't be the only one who anticipated the possible outcome of the second scenario in the way I did, which means that people are able to understand, in at least some part, the direction you are taking this discussion. And no, you have not made yourself my enemy, and it was not my intent to me yours, it was merely an observation made based upon previous topics that have started in a very similar manner to your own.

I'm a bit surprised by the bolded section of your response. I think I made it clear that I don't want to discuss the direction of the experiment until after Part 2. I don't want people to be answering this part with Part 2 in mind.

I gave this poll seven days. After that I will post Part 2. Seven days later we'll discuss them both. Please wait until then for discussions and speculations.

Discussing the ethics of the present scenario is just fine, however. If you want to talk about that, please go ahead.

Oh, come on. The RS&P forum needs respite from the usual brouhaha.

Cri,

this is not a heavy traffic area.......either have it moved or advertise in other forums/threads.

I for one would like to see it reach fruition....its an interesting inquiry.

I would leave the control room under the control of the guy who actually works there and hop in my helicopter. As my co-pilot flew I would prepare to jump on the train and stop it with feet to spare. Then I would personally launch an investigation as to why the train was where it was not supposed to be and endangering six lives.

this thread reminds me of people who complain about stuff but dont even vote.
