I'm curious to see if anyone has any info on this topic: Does a guy's ethnicity effect their rate of development during puberty?

I have heard that boys of ITALIAN descent tend to begin the stages of puberty earlier than others. Does anyone know if this can be substantiated?

I remember in the locker room during grade 6, there were a few 12-year-olds who already had thick armpit hair and full pubic hair bushes, while others were still completely hairless. The hairier boys were all of Italian descent, so it makes it seem as though this might be the case.

I would love to know if anyone else has any info, and also any junior high / high school locker room stories involving puberty/development of body hair.

Seems like a topic that could be googled. (And I am not the grammar police but I think you mean affects not effects).

There are some arabic and indian tribes where the boys start shaving right after their birth. Actually they are born with hair on their cheeks, arms, legs and back. Don't know about pubes though.

Not really sure if I understood the last post.

However, this is a topic that has always intrigued me, and even though I may have claimed to have witnessed the early puberty development of italian-descendant guys in my own personal life, I was hoping to see if others have experienced anything similar or different.

If there are any Italians who read this thread and are willing to comment, I'd be interested to hear whether or not they felt as if they experience puberty developments earlier than their peers? (ie. began growing body/pubic hair before their male counterparts, changes in height, voice, penis size, etc.)

I'm part Greek, and I had to start shaving my mustache when I was 11. All of the white people i've known didn't have to start shaving until they were in their late teens or early 20s.

I'm Italian (Sicilian) and I had the ugly little fuzz moustache over my lip by age 12. I was grabbing my dad's razor and shaving it off. I had to do it a couple times a month, until I hit 16, and by then I was shaving my whole face daily.

The first of my friends to hit puberty was the guy who would become my first boyfriend. He was better hung and hairier than the rest of us. Yes, he was indeed Italian...

Must be a Mediterrenean thing... (Greek, Italian, Spanish, etc...)

Ethnicity affects everything. (or more specifically, the fact that each individual has unique DNA and we aren't all clones of each other). I suppose puberty will be influenced by genes.

Interesting, maybe the Mediterranean region has influence on earlier development. I wonder if any professional research has been done on this topic.

Thanks for your help guys!

Well, I'm of Mediterranean descent and began puberty at age eleven, almost twelve and was shaving regularly by the age of thirteen.

How old were you when you had a full bush and armpit hair?

And what exactly is your heritage, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm Black, 18, and almost hairless.

Tiny bit of facial hair, no hair on my chest, stomach, back, butt, little hair under my armpits, little hair on my legs. I do have pubes.

My daddy's the same way.

This is all very interesting.

I also remember reading, in Jerry Spinelli's "Space Station Seventh Grade", no less, that both boys of Italian AND African descent begin to develop earlier than those of other ethnicities.

I'm pretty sure that I remember in one scene, while the guys are changing in the locker room, the protagonist begins to feel inadequate because he notices that some of his peers already have pubic/armpit hair. His friend later notes that "blacks and Italians begin to grow pubic hair earlier than other kids" (not exact quote, but based on memory).

Now, I can't take a quote from a Jerry Spinelli book as exact science, but I've always kept this idea in the back of my mind. Hence, the reason why I posted this thread.

So, to NaughtyArousal and Ephemeral, you say that you are nearly hairless now (with the exception of pubes), but when you hit puberty, did you notice that you began growing hair in these areas before your peers?

And to all others (particularly Italians/Mediterraneans, but welcome to all), I'm still interested to hear more puberty/pubic hair/body hair related experiences!

I definitely noticed the Greek and Italian boys developed faster - made me feel very kid-like, especially because I was a bit of a late developer. I'm 18 now and a lot of my friends have far more body hair.

I'm of some mixed Euro descent, but Italian/Sicilian more than any other one thing. Don't remember when puberty began.

There could be an ethnic predisposition to an earlier puberty, but ethnicity could also be a proxy for other things:

1. Diet has an effect on the onset of puberty - foods common to certain ethnic groups might be more responsible than actual ethnicity;

2. Italians/Greeks tend to have darker, coarser hair than other Europeans, and I think especially in childhood - the appearance of body hair could be more noticeable for that reason alone.

Agreed. Like I said before, I had the facial hair thing going at 11.....

I had pubic hair long before I started growing hair on other parts of my body. It kinda just popped out of nowhere one day. It went from a few hairs to a field of hair.

I had a lonely childhood, so no playing peek-a-boo with my male friends. The only opportunity I had to see guys undressed was in the locker room. I only spent seconds in there so I wouldn't look at anyone and be called gay.
