Evangelicals Promising Not to Vote, Great!

James Dobson is threatening to boycott the November election. And he wants to take his fanatic followers with him.

In what might be the best news I’ve heard since my first choice of presidential candidates dropped out, Jim Dobson is threatening to boycott the November election. And he wants to take his fanatic followers with him.

James Dobson, the influential founder of the conservative, evangelical advocacy group Focus on the Family, has delivered a blow to John McCain — by saying he won’t vote for him if he’s the Republican presidential nominee.

“I am convinced Sen. McCain is not a conservative, and in fact, has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are … I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

“I believe this general election will offer the worst choices for president in my lifetime. I certainly can’t vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on their virulently anti-family policy positions. If these are the nominees in November, I simply will not cast a ballot for president for the first time in my life,” he said.

Dobson said he was just expressing his views as a private citizen — but many of his millions of followers in the evangelical community, who listen to his radio show and read his books, will take it as a signal to do the same.

What’s got Jimmy so fired up? Do you think it’s because McCain is pro-choice? Of course he’s not. Do you think it’s because McCain wants to get us out of Iraq too soon? Hell, he wants us there forever. Maybe Dobson is worried McCain’s fiscal policy or plan for health insurance will hurt families. Doubt it, since McCain hasn’t talked much about either.

No, Dobson’s issues are much more vital to America.

Dobson said McCain’s failure to support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and his support for embryonic stem-cell research among other things were beyond the Christian conservative pale.

Stay home, James. It will be the best thing you’ve ever done for your country.

Typical "one issue" evangelical. It is sad testimony to Dobson and his followers that, of the myriad vital issues facing this country, that a ban on gay marriage is so crucial and paramount to their vote. In other words, the war, the economy, healthcare, jobs and everything else takes a back seat to their pet social issue. How pathetic is that? Dobson is only making a fool out of himself and underscoring the narrowmindedness of the far right.

Stay home Dobson. The country is not interested in anymore of this crap at the polls. It may have worked to get Bush elected but it's not going to work this time.

Sweet! You boycott away, Dobson, ya fucking freak.

Hell, forgetting for a moment that McCain is a war hawk Rethuglican, I wouldn't vote for him because he's senile.

I fear that McCain will pick Huckabee as his running to get these bastards to vote for him, I really hope that doesn't happen.

The scenario I said a week or more ago that we should fear is a couple steps closer:

* McCain is going to be the Republican nominee.
* Huckabee will be his veep pick, or he has no hope

If they win -- some fanatic ReligioPublican will kill McCain, and we'll have President Huckabee.

Kuli, I don't think anyone will kill McCain. I mean, if they haven't seriously tried to kill W, why would they go after that old man? I think he has more to fear from old age and time than anything else. But a McCain/Huckabee ticket is a true worry to anyone who values freedom from religion.

No one ever said evangelicals were smart

This is so typical of the radical right. Not voting for someone because they disagree on one issue. I can see it now. Whoever is the democratic nominee, they will become the next president. LGBT issues are very important to me, but they are not the only important things to me. Healthcare, better treatment of our veterans, economic policy,
getting out of Iraq in a timely but safe manner, education and many other things are important to me also.

Im not surprised at all at these statements. If huckabee does end up as a VP nom, the democrats better turn up in droves to vote to keep him out.

Sweet! You boycott away, Dobson, ya fucking freak.
For those not familiar with the man, here is a favorite photo of mine:

I'm fully expecting McCain to pick Huckabee as his VP. This will get more Evangelicals out to vote ... but if they want to boycott voting, so be it. The train is going on ... with or without them. It's time for them to catch up with the times.

Not tryin to widen your stance or anything, smelt~ but I couldn’t resist posting the resemblance between your image of Dobson and another goofy guy

I hope they do avoid voting. the right is hoping that by letting the Democrats win, things will go south and the repugs will will the next election. Thats big "IF"... if the democrats do well then they will be in power for 8 years and the repugs will be choking on their words and actions. my theory ? nope rush's and his ilk

yeah the same as islamic extremists - who are terrorists - and kill people

not the same

not at all

some evangelicals are extremists - and are out of touch with the masses - and try to impose their will - and they're quite frankly outnumbered

others are just god fearing people just like anyone else - with different views - good people

don't bunch them all together and make them all like pat dobson for example

and don't compare "them" to islamic extremists - who kill innocents

cuz it's not even remotely similar

not all Islamic extreemist are murdering terrorist so don't bunch them with bin Laden

fuckabee, bush, dobson, phelps they are all of the same ilk .. narrow minded, hate anything non-christian, have no problems shoving their morals down everyone elses throats and pushing their agenda on the world

.. bush has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocents in Iraq by HIS illegal invasion in that country which did not threaten nor could attack the united states and if any other country had done such a thing bush would be first in line to bring sanctions against them and force them to leave.

Best joke of the day: People worried that McCain will pick Huckabee as a VP. Huckabee may be able to pull in the Bible Belt, but that's like what, 5% of the popular vote? Worse, if Huckabee gets on the ticket, they'll win those states, but lose all of the big states, and can you really afford to lose NY, Texas, Florida, and California in the coming election?

If I HAD to limit my choices of VP to those that had run, I'd go with Romney, given his strength in economic issues and McCain's weakness, but only after McCain talks to him in a locked room...preferably using a bitch slap technique backed by a 2x4...
