Ever feel guilty for killing?

nah cause there usually sometime of demon that's trying to eat my flesh, or a terriost, or a zombie...or a nazi! :)

that was reference to the following games...... (doom 3, counter-strike, Resident evil and Return to Castle Wolfenstien!

I work for Orkin pest control. Enough said!

Ordinarily, no: any bug that comes into my house will be exterminated. Rodents, too. They are invaders and they fuck up my stuff, so I have no pity.

But this one time... the Grandmother nagged me into going outside and spraying the trees and shrubs with malathion to prevent peach-leaf curl and aphids and what-not; it was a nasty business, my head wrapped in rags so I didn't poison myself, using a hand-pump spray can, out in the noonday sun performing (O! the indignity!) manual labor.

But as I was sitting on the front porch taking a rest from my labors, I saw this lovely Monarch butterfly come frolicking through the air over my lawn. Then it landed on the lantana that I had just sprayed liberally with poison, took a sip or two, and staggered off to die somewhere private.

I was devastated! I've never felt so guilty in my whole life. Sure, butterflies are just insects, but they're well-dressed insects. Just as the only difference between a sewer-rat and a sweet little squirrel is the fluffy tail and the big soft eyes, the only thing that renders butterflies non-repellent is their wings. They're the drag-queens of the animal world.

At any rate, I felt horrible about the whole thing, and have ever since maintained a policy of not killing bugs outdoors if I can possibly help it. Sure I get some on my windshield, but I never poison them or spray for them or even light citronella candles. They can have the outdoors.

But like I said before, they come in my house, they're fair game.

I normally just pick up insects and spiders and put them outside. I don't mind setting mouse traps though - I don't like mouse shit in my cupboards. And of course I kill Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons, and any other proselytising evangelists...

yeah i don't like killing stuff. i even move earth worms off the side walks in the moring when they are trying to cross 'cause i know they wont make it and they will burn up and look like little mangeled sticks by the time i get home. oh i also move turtles off the road!

When I was very young , there was about fifty acres behind our home. Hunters would hunt deer , squirrels, rabbits etc in there .
I would take my allowance to buy "NO Hunting" signs and my buddy and I would go post the signs at the edge of the woods .....
We'd also take wire from burnt tires and run lines about a foot off the fround to discourage hunters .....
I too .. have stopped to move turtles to safety .....
Guess I am just a big ole softie, at heart ...

My grandfather once put a hit out on a chipmunk who lived in the garage, for 2 dollars I went stalking through the garage with my pellet gun, I was like 7, and shot the little vermin. After looking it in the eyes as it died and such I found that I disliked the feeling of just killed it. The cute factor didn't help. That was the last time I killed a rodent.

I forgot to say, I do the same thing with turtles, I stop and just carry him over to the side he was trying to get to. Ever since reading the "Grapes Of Wrath" I stop for turtles and help.

If I can avoid killing a critter, I would just as soon try to live peacefully with them. I like to believe that all animals have the right to exist.

Humans, on the other hand. . .

i love roasting hornet nests with a self-made flamethrower :)

I tend to try to usher them out into the garden, except for spiders which look too menacing and therefore must be exterminated before they can crawl onto me.

And mozzies, which are annoying. And also spread death. Which leads us rather neatly to...

My research work in malaria, the death spread by aforementioned filthy mozzies. The work, unfortunately, involves murine (mouse) malaria as a model for human malaria, so I do have to infect mice with a lethal pathovar of malaria and conduct the experiments I am doing to rejuvenate an older drug which is not used as much anymore. Rather than let the malaria finish them off after the experiment is done, I euthanase them myself.

Yes it's for a good cause - 2 million dead children every year is a good cause, I should wager - but it's not nice to do.
