I think Dutch is an awful language. But hey, it's the lingua franca around here, so what can you do?

I'd be perfectly happy speaking English all day...

Heh. I like Dutch. It has its own guttural charm. All I know are a few swear words I picked up from a Dutch friend at school and the last two lines of a filthy limerick about a girl named Kaatje and a spider that found itself in an unlikely part of her anatomy, but I figure that's more than enough to get by on.

Oh dear, I hoped at least that people would understand I was being ironic. Apparently some didn't even bother to read the text of my post. Obviously I have nothing against anybody in those countries I named, except their tendency to generalize in what I consider a terribly rude way about the US. Some recent examples:

America also tried to ban 'Gay friendly' Teletubbies and Pingu. Maybe the solution to right wing nut jobs worrying about their children is to castrate the fuckers in the first place...

I think it's sad that a country that advocates, nay rams the concept of Liberty down other peoples's throats should be so unaccepting of these kinds of clubs.

Yes, ugly things happen here. We're a big country. We have a lot of idiots. All of the examples I quoted relate to things that happened one time in one place. 99% of Americans think they're ridiculous/appalling.

Next I'm going to start combing through your local papers and posting every nasty thing that happens there with the comment "Why does [fill in name of country] always do things like that? That could never happen in the US!".

I have lived in "the rest of the world" and I have seen it first hand.
Sadly, it is a valuable tool that many use to take their minds off their own problems.
It doesn't matter if it's true or not. Everybody likes to feel superior now and then...

You just have to look beyond that.
You do not have to apologize for being American (as a lot of people are willing to do to "win points").
Just live your life in the best way you can.

Just hearing Irish (whether Gaelic or English with an Irish accent) makes me weka in the knees!

It should be! Unless you're having a conversation with our Queen, just swearing, making random guttural sounds and letting someone in on poor Kaatje will be enough to build a life.
