they lead to that really heavy shit like Christianity and waking up before noon. It won't be long 'til you're smiling at complete strangers and asking how their day is going as if the response matters at all.

o.o

I smile at complete strangers and ask how their day is going....

uh oh.

I didn't know about AA + God, but I do know that most AAers I've met emerge as moderate to heavy chain smokers... which I guess is better?

I could see how an alcoholic would rather die at 60 of emphysema than within the next few days in a car accident or alc poisoning or something. But still. Cigarette addictions suck.

I tend to view it as a dogmatic organisation that borgifies its members.

assimiation at any cost.

it is a cult.

I have seen friends turn their addction to alcohol into an addiction to meetings.

it is just a replacement addiction and excuses people for responsiblity for their behaviors.

it was really trendy in the eighties and I am glad to see that it has devolved abit socially.

I've been to an AA meeting before. I suppose I can't speak for the organization elsewhere but the chapter I saw was pretty nice. In line with the cliches but not a bad environment; they didn't try hard to push religion. However, I think everyone was chiansmoking and addicted to coffee. Still, I've never felt the urge to break something while yelling at cars after 10 cups of coffee and a handful of Marlboros.

Isn't an addiction to meetings better than an addiction to booze? Perhaps cultism is the last resort for a heavily addicted drinker.

it is a cult.

Formula: Excessive drinking / wake up call(s) X years of denial, repression, and struggle = cult eligibility? I could see that, lol. Maybe a cult's what they need.

Any AAers, formerly or presently, who can contribute to the convo? I've always been very intrigued by the whole thing.

AA meetings are a gateway to coffee and cigs?

I mean, I have yet to meet somebody who swears by these meetings (and I've met a few) who don't smoke cigs and drink copious amounts of coffee. They all live in New York, incidentally.

The term "gateway drug" is most properly used when referring to a lesser drug leading to a worse one. The OP was being sarcastic, with a hint of truth (about Christianity), and the rest of us are saying that AA leads to a lot of other things of questionable goodness (that may or may not be worse than the meetings themselves).

Didn't AA just turn 30 or something like that? OH DANG, just looked it up - 75!!

I rest my case. lol ;) Why were you awake at such an ungodly hour? I'm just going to bed at that time. Seriously though, I'd love to be that crazy person who wakes up at 6:00 a.m. to do yoga or jog on the beach. On the other hand, I also enjoy just going to bed at that hour and sometimes, not alone. :D

lol, USUALLY that's my bed time, but I accidentally fell asleep on the couch at 8 pm, and woke my self up at around 6 am. AND THEN I WENT BACK TO SLEEP AT 1 PM. =.=

I either appreciate what AA has done for many people, or believe that the whole program is a crock of shit.

I haven't decided yet.

I think it's a little of both...

But, there's no denying it's helped a hell of a lot of people. So, maybe it's true they are just trading one addiction for another, but an addiction to going to meetings isn't going to lead to them drinking themselves to death or killing someone in a car...

if they do i'll pull a 'Grace'

i can fake being an alchy for free snacks and entertaining new social group.

and if they have wifi......... oh shit.

That's right thus the movie "Fight Club"

Sometimes AA meetings are a great place to score -- chemically and sexually.
