What are they thinking?

Blue Ray Technologies Calls Paramount Deal "Desperate"

Posted August 23, 2007 by Josh

Blue Ray Technologies, the first independent Blu-ray manufacturer in the US, has issued a press release regarding the recent exclusivity agreement between Paramount and HD DVD. Commenting on the move, Erick Hansen, founder of Blue Ray Technologies, said, "Toshiba and HD-DVD offered this deal because they are desperate. The public has chosen Blu-ray discs with their pocket books, buying BDs 2-to-1 over HD-DVDs this year."

Regarding why he disagrees with the move, Hansen commented, "For retailers, it's like being forced to stock VHS tapes after the public chose DVDs. For the consumer it creates more confusion that hurts the industry-wide move to hi-def."

Hansen also says he isn't the only person speaking out. "If multi-billion dollar director Steven Spielberg and billion dollar director Michael Bay like Blu-ray, the deal is a double-edged sword." Commenting further, "If these two spoke up so quickly, you can be sure that there are a dozen others who will follow suit if they have the clout on a film."

He also hopes that others will be as outspoken as himself. "I would like to see others take a stand, this is only slowing the inevitable and hurting consumers and the business. It's not that I'm surprised they took the deal but it's like paying them not to grow crops. How is the film industry going to segue into the next-gen world if it accepts a relative pittance to stunt its growth?"

I'm pissed that Transformers won't come out on BluRay. Paramount is full of shit nowadays. I am not going to buy their crap anymore. Hell, I'm not even going to download it. I can't wait for the day when BluRay gains victory over HD-DVD and Paramount will get what they deserve.

:grrr:

*sells Star Trek DVD collection on ebay*

I dont have Blu-Ray so I don't care and It is not even that serious to Byocott it. Blu-Ray is very hi-tech and I've heard it was difficult to work with.

Exactly. What the fuck do I care if Paramount wont use blu-ray?

Good, Blu-ray is bloody pointless anyways.

It's not gonna matter any if the movie wasn't first filmed with the technology.

Of course Blu-Ray woudl call the move desperate.

It's like When Microsoft disses a product then when it does well talks about how many Microsoft Users USE that product.

Sorry Blu-Ray is just Sony's version of HD... it's really not that big-O-deal...Niether is HD for that matter... but I'm not going to get into how a Blu-Ray disc coudl never be filled with 'raw' datat and all that.

Transformers WAS filmed with the technology.

Blu-Ray is not just Sony's version of HD. Most manufacturers chose BR over HD, because it is a better version of it. HD-DVD can sod off with its retarded VC-1 codec.

If you don't care, why bother and reply??

And come on, I live in a 3rd world country (more or less) and even here we are very serious about it.

And how is BluRay any more difficult to "work with" than e.g. DVD? You take the disc out of the cover, insert it into your player and press the "Play"-Button. That is all.

I dont have bluray either cuz its only a shit smudge better than hddvd and they charge up your ass for it.

Wtf! whos is this guy... Hansen LOL he says Bluray is like DVDs and HDdvd is like VHS. Hes a tool cuz this whole thing Bluray vs HDdvd is more like BetaMax vs VHS and I think Bluray is the Betamax.:p

What's the point of bluray or hd anyway? Jeeze how clear do you need the picture to be in order to enjoy it? Far as I'm concerned the only upgrade that would warrant a move from DVD is holographic imagery. And frankly Sony is the one who's really desperate for coming-up with all of this bluray nonsense in the first place. I'm just hoping the public doesn't fall for it en masse.

Actually, I think you've made a good point. IMO, for the prices these things are going for, the only time it really makes a difference is if you happen to be the owner of a huge tv screen (50"+). If you have a huge screen and watch normal TV or even DVD's, the picture quality looks as if you need glasses because every thing is so big. So, HD quality really clears things up nicely both on the screen and in your wallet.

I'm boycotting all the studios, because they won't release their films for my BetaMax.

Wow doesn't take much to get you unecessarily angry. Where you one of the people who starved themselves for Sanjaya?

I save me boycots/protests for political or social issues not minute technical differences

But don't you know that the two biggest issues in the world right now are poverty and Blu-Ray VS HDdvd!!! Take a stand!!!

Just kidding. I agree with you 100%

I limit myself to boycotting one company at a time. Right now it's Electronic Arts (EA) and them for horribly using the GoldenEye license. Once they apollogize for that, then I can boycott Paramount. However, I'm indfferent to the situation until I buy an HD tv.

You don't have to buy an extra large screen to fully enjoy HD. Neither do you have to buy the most expensive one. Almost every brand has their entry class models, affordable for almost everyone (ranging between $ 400 - 600).

All that matters is the use of the right equipment, the right cabling and the viewing distance. Sitting too close to a large screen is not ideal. The optimal distance to a 50" screen would be at least 16-18 feet.

Fine. It would be nice if you could save your replies exclusively for threads of political or social issues as well.

And btw, I wasn't one of those who starved themselves for Sanjaya.

Well buy one of them players that does HD and Blue Ray!

Plus Blue Rays over priced! Be good if it went completely!
