Approaches were made to the rebel command by the British and were rebuffed.

It is very easy for the United Kingdom, and France to seal the skies over Libya, and deny the Gadaffi forces use of their aircraft against the rebels.

Now that the rebels are in retreat there is a possibility that they may accept a measure of military assistance from France, and the United Kingdom.

With French fighters on standby in Corsica, and British fighters on standby on the island of Cyprus there is no good reason why Gadaffi's heavy armaments, and aircraft cannot be eliminated in 48 hours.

Then there is the world of international intrigue........................

According to some news reports, the opposition in Libya have been waiting on the West, and are wondering why no one has come to help them.

That's similar to how the US turned Afghanistan into a terrorist-run land: we walked out on people who trusted us.

At the very least, Obama could tell Egypt that we'll replace any planes they lose keeping Ghaddafi from going farther and making this a slaughter.
 
Those are the people we should be talking to. The Tunisians, the Egyptians. You can't send Nato troops in, there will inevitably be civilians killed, backlash, more radicalisation.

Plus, my understanding was that you'd be giving the egyptians some new planes and tanks and that at the end of the year, anyway.
 
The Italians expressed a willingness for using their bases for enforcing a no-fly zone. I think that would work if Arab states made the first moves and invited NATO participation. The ones who shouldn't get personnel involved is America, except humanitarian.

That's another front Obama should be pushing: persuading countries like Greece and Poland, Lithuania and Denmark, to join France in their recognition of the opposition as the legitimate government. That ought to give impetus to getting something real done... like slipping the opposition a couple of hundred Stingers (or whatever they use for that these days).

And for God's sake release that $30 billion to them!
 
30 Billion was Mubarak, was it not. I thought Muamar and his swivel-eyed, fuckwit ilk were worth more.

Mubarak was at $40 billion and counting last I knew. $30 billion is how much of Libya/Ghaddafi bucks the US alone froze -- I don't remember how much Switzerland had frozen, but it was substantial, as was what Europe grabbed.
 
I know that squaters have siezed Saif al-Islams house in London...dunno if the government have seized any assets though
