NEW YORK — One of former President George W. Bush's twin daughters says she supports gay marriage.

The national gay rights group Human Rights Campaign has released a video featuring 29-year old Barbara Bush.

Barbara Bush calls herself "a New Yorker for marriage equality" and says people should be able to marry the person they love.

The former president opposed gay marriage and endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment to outlaw it.

I just finished reading GW's book, Dick Chaney is telling him he can't run for VP because his daughter is gay. George's reply, " I don't care what orientation your daughter is, I want you on the ticket"

Politicians rarely express their true feelings, they are too busy catering to their power base.

Re: Obama is no longer a left wing liberal but is more centrist. He saw the results of the midterm elections and realized were the power was coming from.

Politicans don't really change what they believe deep down, they just change on the surface to stay in power.

Politicans are most concerned with getting elected and staying elected, party loyalty come second. This applies to all politicans.

You're right, of course. But when they come out against anything gay it pleases me to be pissed. It doesn't help much but it does get me active in putting some king of protest out there.
They have to sound true to their base, which makes them the hypocrites that they are. The base probably knows he is lying but don't give a damn as long as he says what they want to hear.

As you may recall, GWB appointed Cheney to chair a committee to find for him a vice president. After months of searching, Cheney recommended the only qualified person he could find: himself!

This puzzles me. What is the motivation for the ghost writer or W to create this story? To make him look better? To whom? It certainly isn't to make Bush score brownie points with the left, because that ain't happening ever. He doesn't gain anything from the right by including it; it is contrary to the hard right's stance. If anything he would lose standing by including a falsehood like this.

So what is his or his ghost writer's motivation?

I presume it's to soften GWB's appearance as a homophobe and general bad guy. Bush spent much of his presidency stirring up hatred against us. He got most states to outlaw gay marriage and even proposed the codification of bigotry into the US constitution! He made speech after speech insisting we would destroy marriage for straight people. He staunchly supported DADT and DOMA. He ordered the indefinite detention of prisoners without trial. He is the first and only president ever to sanction the torturing of prisoners. He tapped thousands of phones and examined tens of thousands of emails without a warrant to do so. He illegally abducted foreign nationals from foreign soil without authorization, and without notifying the local governments. He established secret prisons to get around human rights requirements for the due process of law. He started a war based on lies. But I doubt that's the way GWB wants to be remembered to posterity. I think the biggest motivation for writing this book was to try to soften Bush's image for the history books.

But the fact that Cheney recommended himself for VP is a matter of historical record. I remember the snickering by the media when that happened. "Cheney looked around the room and he was the only person he could find."

If it is for the left, they are not going to put the long list of things that he did (that you listed) aside for the sake of one comment. Cheney had recommended 10 people to be considered, his name was not amoung them. The 5 top names were Lamar Alxander of TN, Tom Ridge of PA, Frank Keating of OK, Bill First and Fred Thompson of TN
