Help!!

I have a WD Essentials external hard drive which seems to have died. I tried a new power cable but that makes no difference.

Can anyone tell me whether I can revive it and, if so, how. I have a massive amount of data (movies etc) on it, put together over many years and am distraught at the thought of losing it all.

Thanks.

:(

you can try to open the case. quite often the usb controller just died and you can still connect the harddrive with either a new case, or directly to your pc.

Thanks, Corny.

I couldn't open the case but whilst trying to do so I noticed a button on the back of the case. I pressed it and plugged the hard drive in again. Hey presto, it worked. I am so happy - thanks for your help.

This is such a great forum - you guys are so helpful.

:-):D

Glad to hear that it's working again. I just recently bought a WD 1TB portable hard drive and it doesn't have a power supply to it just plugs right in to the USB which is probably why it's slow with transferring files.

HDs fail all the time. Always keep your data in more than one place!

^ exactly.

Perhaps now would be a good time to make a backup plan.
